PSU hookup questions

Hey everyone. I just recently was on here asking about my first gaming rig build http://. I finally received all of the parts and have watched many videos on how to put together computers. I finished building my computer with almost no problems and have installed the OS and all other items. Here's my question, I don't think I hooked up my psu fan correctly. How do I properly tell? I'm guessing the fan hook up is separate from the motherboard power and the cpu power. There is one "type 3" 6 pin connector that hooks into one of the empty slots on my power supply and the other end has molex connectors that I do not need but there is a 4 pin connector at the very end which looks like it should hook into the 4 pin fan control on my motherboard.

Here's the problem though. Any time I try to hook up this 4 pin connector to any fan slot on my motherboard the whole system will refuse to start up. Also if the computer is already on and I try to hook the 4 pin up it will turn off the system instantly. I'm guessing that the motherboard is doing this to protect itself from an incorrect hookup. So far I have not seen or heard the psu fan kick on. I know it has to be under a certain amount of load to kick on but is there any way to just turn it on manually? Any help would be appreciated!

That connector is a power supply connector for the "old" FDDs drives.
.. DO NOT USE FOR Fans
.. Connecting it to a Fan header on the MB - OUCH, that is really asking for trouble as you could be shorting out you MB fan circuitry, or even worse applying +5 V to +12 V - Hopefully you have NOT damaged your MB!!!

Well lesson learned then, I haven't noticed any issues with the motherboard. Everything seems to be working fine.
