Hello everyone,
I am looking for a GPU to provide smooth gaming @1080p (single monitor).
my budget limits to around 300-350$, but I preffer not to pass the 300$ mark.
My current system specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 650 @ 3.2 Ghz
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 650 OC 1GB edition
RAM: Corsair XMS3 8GB @1600Mhz
PSU: I Don't know the exact model but it can go up to 450W (and I can upgrade it withing the budget).

What I currently have in mind is the 660 (regular or Ti) and HD 7870 or 7950.
Open to other suggestions.
Please help me choose.

note: I have no idea how to OC, GPU or CPU.

Thanks.

I have deep doubt about the Readon cards.
I know they are much cheaper, but I heard many complaints about bad drivers .
Since I never owned a Raedon card and I don't know anyone who does I can't tell if it's true.
Should I consider this and issue?
Also, is there any replacement to Nvidia's Adaptive Vsync?

no that is not true, actually amd driver is buggy but not bad at all.

I heard Vsync takes up to half (!) of the gpu power and that's why I need the Adaptive V-sync.
The question is if there is any way to prevent the tearing without such a performance cost (assuming v-sync really takes up that much).
is there any sort of program that simply limits FPS to 60 on AMD cards?

Ok then. Really glad to hear.
First thanks for the (lightning fast) responds.
Second, out of the AMD cards, should I go for a 7870 or 7950?
I'm trying to avoid passing the 350$. The question is if the 7870 is enough (or some sort of boosts or Ghz editions?)
also if I should upgrade the PSU with both or just the 7950?
thanks.

There are two basic complaints of significant concern with AMD at present:

1. Frame latency - You will see that the better know sites are all adding frame latency tests to the usual fps tests. read about it here:
http://techreport.com/discussion/23981/radeon-hd-7950-vs-geforce-gtx-660-ti-revisited#metal

2. The Crossfire issue has been around for years but was given much credence as there was no way to measure what peeps were reporting. Now there is:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/graphics-card-benchmarking-frame-rate,3466.html
That should settle the 660 Ti verses 7990 / 7870 question as that test shows a slight fps lead over the 7950 but a significant difference in frame latency

Not sure which 650 ya have.... but IIRC, only the Boost supports SLI

The 650 Ti Boost in SLI beats the 670, 680
http://www.lanoc.org/review/video-cards/6387-gtx-650-ti-boost-sli?start=4

The 660 Ti works with 450 watter.

Ok. So about the frame latencys - will it be an issue on my system? (something noticable?)
also, will this PSU be enough for the 7950 (the 500W)? I am not planning on OC.
http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Builder-Watt-EPS%C2%A0-CX500/dp/B0092ML0MY/ref=sr_1_19?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1367345248&sr=1-19&keywords=CORSAIR+Enthusiast+Series

for the 7950, which brand would you reccomend ? I have little to no understanding about the tech details.
Also, just to make sure, will the 7950 be able to run most known games at high settings?
I am planning on using it for games like Bioshock Infinite and ArmA III (as an example.)
(I know ArmA is CPU intensive but a good GPU would help...)
And on the bottom line, will a gtx 660 Ti preform the same? (because overall cost is the same because of the PSU)
Will the 660 Ti be able to run the games I mentioned on high settings?
I just need to know the little details about both before deciding.
Thanks.
