I've given up all hope. After 2 1/2 weeks of trolling forums with similar issues and troubleshooting on my own I leave it in the trustworthy hands of the internet. While playing games I've downloaded off steam my computer will freeze leaving whatever image was on the screen at the time there. Its important to note that this only occurs on games I've DOWNLOADED off steam. I bought Dishonored at Fry's and installed it off the disc, and play through steam and it runs just fine. Half the time my I/Os will lose power, but either way are unresponsive, forcing me to do a hard restart. my specs are:

mobo: Gigabyte GA-H77-D3H
CPU: Intel I5-3570k
GPU: Gigabyte Geforce Nvidia GTX 660
HDD: Western Digital Green 500gb
PSU: Corsair TX750M
RAM: 16gb Patriot DDR3 1600

Troubleshooting steps taken so far:
-updating drivers for all applicable hardware
-updating bios
-rolling back from windows 8 to windows 7
-monitoring hardware temps for overheating (not an issue)
-replacing GPU in case it was factory faulty
-disabling PhysX
-disabling Steam cloud synchronization
-disabling onboard graphics on my mobo
-looking up all errors in event viewer for a possible solution. Nothing useful is logged after a freeze occurs.
-playing steam in offline mode
-reinstalling games

-and a few other things I cant remember off the top of my head.

I'm going to try testing my ram next and moving it to other slots, in the mean time if anyone has an ideas I have fresh baked cookies at the ready.
