My system has been running fine for months then yesterday it just shut off while idling. No bsod or anything, just shut off. When I reboot I get to right about where the login screen should come up and it just shuts off again. A couple times it has successfully booted to windows but dies within a minute or so. After several tries I can get into safe mode and it hasn't ever crashed in safe mode. I have run chkdsk and found no errors. I have even swapped my vid card thinking it might be the issue. I have run memtest with no errors and have reseated all my hardware as well. All my components are quite new.

AMD FX6100 six core
8 gigs ram
GTS650Ti vid card
970A motherbd

As I said it has run flawlessly for months and I had made no recent changes to anything. Oh and I tried a system restore but that didn't help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like a power issue, right until you go to safe mode.

I suggest you backup all the data you want to save and reinstall windows. Yes, it's a pain, but it'll save you days of troubleshooting, which would likely end up with you reinstalling windows anyways.

Thanks, but I could spend days backing up a terrabyte of data (after buying another HDD), reinstalling Windows and every last bit of software, every login and password, etc. only to find that it hasn't fixed the problem at all. What if it is a hardware issue? Reinstalling Windows is no more of a solution than suicide is a cure for cancer. Sorry, not trying to be ungrateful but there's got to be more than that.

If it's not crashing in safe mode, then it's a software issue, not a hardware issue.

That being said, since reinstalling windows isn't an option for you, your next step is to run Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials while in safe mode. (Since you've tried booting into windows recovery and repair, correct?)

So it turns out after a bunch of trial and error that it WAS the power supply. I swapped it out and everything is fine. I have to assume that safe mode was drawing just little enough current to not overload the failing PS. I am very glad I didn't start wiping anything. I was about to reset Windows when it crashed while trying to boot from the Windows disk and that was the giveaway. Thanks for the assistance anyway.

Ah - I'm very surprised. In that case, I apologize profusely for the incorrect advice.

I didn't consider that safe mode would draw slightly less power than normal booting - the chances for that to have to happen and have the power supply fail at just over that voltage must have been astounding.
