Hey all, I recently put together an Asus FX990 R2.0 motherboard with x2 Radeon 6950 graphics cards but then i noticed it started heating up cause the cards were too close to eachother so i decided to take the bottom one out. When i did that, all sounds completely stopped. I tried everything. Checked the bios if it sounds were disabled and if i could enable them again and there was no option for that. I re-installed new Realtek drivers, uninstalled them and re-installed them again. I do have AMD high definition audio including Realtek under sounds in device management. I tried uninstalling the AMD high definition audio as well but whenever i restart the pc they just re-appear again as if i never uninstalled them. They're both up to date with the latest drivers. I tried removing the graphics card again and re-installing it but that didn't work either. I'm running out of ideas.

Info:
Windows 7 pro 64bit
ASUS Sabertooth FX 990 R2.0 motherboard
FX 8320 AMD Processor
16GB (8x2) 1866 DDR3 RAM (for some reason the bios will only allow up to 1600 mhz)
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 graphic card
(Speakers are plugged in the green jack. I also tried them on my laptop and they work fine.)

Please help!

Did you check sound properties under the control panel to make sure it's outputting to the correct device? Also, try reinstalling the audio driver. If not, that board is under warranty. Call ASUS. Their tech support is top notch.

I'm thinking it may be the board, but there are a few more things I'd like you to try so we can be sure.

Download Ubuntu, boot from CD, and see if the audio works. This eliminates Windows as the problem. Next, test the speakers with anything with a headphone jack and make sure they work. Do the reverse of that test and check the jack with headphones.

Also: In windows, under the sound options in the control panel, does it know when you have something plugged in? Have you tested sound via HDMI out on the GPU?

If you run through these options, it's probably the board. Call asus. 1-812-282-2787 (assuming you're in the US, I have the other numbers if you're not). You may need to RMA the board on a warranty claim. Assuming again you're in the US, you'll have to pay one-way shipping (you pay on the way, they pay to send it back).

ALSO: To get your ram to run at 1866 you need to manually set the timings in bios. I'm not sure, but you can probably only have one stick per channel. It WILL work if you do it correctly. I can't tell you what to set the timings to without the make and model of the ram.
