Hi,

About half a year ago I made myself a new system. To prepare for the upcoming games I wanted to see how far my CPU and GPU would overclock. That is to say I wanted to see what I could achieve and then simply undo what I did just to make sure it wil run at those speeds should I need it in the future.

As for the CPU : I overclocked my 3570K to 4.5 Ghz on 1.08V. It runs stable 24/7 running aida64. As far as I know aida64 is great for cpu stressing. Personally i just checked every box so heat from the gpu would also get to the cpu to see a worst case scenario. With everything maxed running it for ages the max temp was 61C with a Scythe Mugen 3 cooler running at 1000RPM (Max RPM is 1600). Running of of this it runs any games and applications just fine.

This seemed like quite a solid result so I am happy with that and maybe somebody could give me advice on how to get further?

Now for the GPU. This is a bit more troublesome then I would have liked. I have a MSI 7950 Twinfrozr and at stock speeds it wil run at 73C with 65% fan speed with a 17C ambient. It's really loud and anoying really. I thought this wasen't right so i tried to RMA it but they said it would be fine up to 110C hmph 110C my ass runs on 110C *sorry*.

When i overclock it to 1Ghz the core reaches 83C at 80% fan speed. This sounds like a hurricane in my room. And that is with the case open... After i tried to raise the voltage to 1.05 volts when I launched a light game which uses 30% of the GPU's power. It shot up to 95C and BSOD'd me almost immediatly. Maybe it's the thermal paste?

Remove the cooler and re apply the thermal paste. I've read of alot of people having to this with the 7950 TF III, since there was either too much/little applied at the factory or it was really messy job. You won't void the warranty if there is no damage done to the card and it is only four screws to remove the cooler so it should be a piece of cake ;) . People have reported signifigantly lower load temps after reapplying the thermal paste.

I have the same card, and mine only reaches about 60C under load at stock clocks with the fan speed set manually to 60%. Overclocked to 1150mhz it hits high 80's at 100% fan speed. I guess I got one of the better ones, but I will soon replace the paste myself to see if I get better temps while overclocked.

Cool thanks man. I indeed have read some stories about how reapplying the thermal paste really helps. As far as i know you indeed have one of the better stock ones then. Saves you alot of trouble i'd say :p. I wil try reapplying the thermal paste.
