Hello first post here
When I didn’t have any kids, I seemed to be a lot more involved in staying up to date with the latest in computer world... but it seems, I just don’t have the time anymore...
But I just feel like i would like to update my graphics card... since it seems to be the oldest of part in my PC...
Now I am a casual gamer (mainly because I just don’t have the time) But when I start a game i often get hooked and play through in a few weeks....
My system now is:
Intel i5 750 @2.67 Ghz Clarfield Lynfield
Mainboard Asus P7P55D
12 GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GTS 250 PCIe2 2.2 Ghz 1GB
96GB SSD RAM

So I can play everything so far… last game I played was COD 3… and Mass Effect3…
Really liked Mass Effect… anyways… I might look into Bio Shock infinite and the newest skyrim.

Does it make sense to update to a for example GTX 650 TI Boost?
Will it bring any better performance? What is the bottleneck in this system for gaming…?
Also I do a lot of photo (and Video editing)… that is the second power use of my PC…

Don’t want to spent a fortune here… I always look for Best performance for reasonable price…

Please update! that system is crying for the new cheapy hardware out at the moment :) take a look at the new generation of haswell processors when they come out [dont buy yet if youre just starting to think about upgrading] I would purchase something along the lines of a 650ti boost and then consider upgrading to the newest chipset board and the haswell i5 unlocked chip when it comes out

thanks for the feedback... I don’t have any major complaints so far... beside some lag in photo editing...

I am just wondering what the bottleneck of the system seems to be?

since I guess I got plenty of ram.. raid system and SSD...

now CPU and Graphic card are questionable... also my monitor was more like a good mediocre at time of purchase...

  • So how much NOTICABLE improvement will a better CPU or Graphic card bring (with a mediocre monitor)?

    what is the bottleneck here?

THANKS for your time

quite alot to be honest, especially with gaming and editing. With hyperthreading editing will become a breeze and the new generations of graphics cards have really got some oomf. the bottleneck will be with both components since you're editing and gaming, wheres editing is starting to become more gpu intensive it still requires some hard processing power so having either or is really no bonus these days as you cant use them to their full potential

let me ask also about Monitor... will this be a big question... how good the monitor is?

So would a update of the graphic card for now already bring a boost?

And maybe in a year update the whole system... I always dread a new main board ... because it means usually a new install of operating system... and I am not quite yet ready for WIN 8.... I think...plus new CPU come out...

I guess the 12 GB RAM is plenty... or? and Raid and SSD should be good too....

to be honest, your output will only be as good as your monitor, but if its HD youre fine. You can pick up a very good 24" monitor for about £100-£130 these days. The graphics card will be a big improvement but to be honest, if youre seriously thinking about upgrading the whole system i'd just wait, if you buy now when you will spend a considerable amount of money on a decent graphics card, that wont be able to be used to its full capability, if you wait a year or so to upgrade the whole system, you can get all the components cheaper (as electronics is allways falling in price) so you'll actually be able to get 2x the power for the buck in a years time.. id wait mate, live with a crappy computer for now and get a better one when you can afford the lot

by the way, updating the main board doesnt mean a new OS install, your OS is installed on your hard drive, so it will be compatible with the new board, and you can buy windows 7 OEM disk versions off Ebay for around £40. To be honest with the state windows 8 is in at the moment i would only buy windows 7, its what i used on my recent build.

alright... don't think i wanna wait ;)

let me ask you something else... seems like i could get the GTX 660 for roughly 205$ (about $25 more than 550ti boost)
Is the GTX 660 noticable better... they dont seem to have the 550ti boost locally around...

Also does it make sense to think about getting a second graphic card and running them in Dal (SLI/crossfire mode with my GTS 250 1GB)?

Thanks!
