I already own-

A cooler Master HAF 912 case (To keep my CPU cool)
A Corsair VS 650 (Which i think should be enough for even the FX series)
& a Sapphire 7850 2 Gigs OC Edition

Now i have 2 partial systems. I need to know which one would be better for gaming with this 7850 (Gaming at 1600x900).

System 1-
Proc - Intel Q8400 [Already own]
Motherboard - Have GIgabyte G41M-ES2L (with a PCI-e 1.1 slot, doesn't work properly with a 7850 in it, games lag) So gonna have to find a secondhand motherboard with a PCI-e 2.0 slot, se need a new mobo - cost = atleast $40 - $60
RAM - Already have a couple of DDR2 (800 MHz) sticks (2+2 gigs ADATA RAM)

System 2-
Proc - AMD FX 4100 [Don't own it, will have to buy it ~$110]
Mobo - Already have a spare Gigabyte 880GM-D2H
RAM - Have 1 stick of Simmtronics (Local) DDR3 1333 MHz RAM (2 Gigs) Gonna buy another one with the FX 4100 (~$20)

Can someone tell me, which one would be better.? The Intel Q8400 or the FX 4100 (At stocks) & also, how much would i be able to OC the FX 4100 on that Gigabyte 880GM-D2H board.?

System 2 for sure, but look for a FX4300 or the new FX4350 they should be the same or close in price. I would not OC very much on that board though as there is no cooling on the VRM, but at least your PCIE3 will work better in a 2.0 slot.

Thanks a LOT fungi. It was a big confusion for me since the past few days. Getting an FX based system has a lot of other benefits for me too (That i didn't mention in the post, as it would've been too large then)
Secondly, i can't use a piledriver CPU on that motherboard. It's not supported by the motherboard (according to the cpu support list on gigabyte's site)
Now, what kind of gaming can i hope to achieve on that FX 4100 with 2+2 gigs of a local 1333 MHz DDR3 (Well, it's not actually bad RAM, it's used here in india a lot, it's just not some gaming RAM) & a Sapphire 7850 2 gigs OC edition.?

I consider 40+ fps to be playable (heck, even 30+ fps is good enough for me, but below that, i consider unplayable) & i play every type of game (just, not very CPU intensive ones usually, right now NFS Most wanted, AC3, etc, & all of those lag on my 7850, as in, below 20 fps, cuz of the PCI-e 1.1 slot)

My current motherboard has 2 problems (Gigabyte G41M-ES2L)
1. I can't OC my processor (Q8400) on this board, as it has an FSB wall of 340 MHz (My proccy works on 333x8=2.66 GHz)
2. It can't use my new GPU (7850) properly (Lags in all new games because mobo has PCI-e 1.1 & it IS infact problematic with the AMD's PCI-e 3.0 cards from the 7xxx series contrary to the popular belief that all PCI-e 3.0 cards work fine on a PCI-e 1.1 slot)

So, for OCing my Q8400 & using my new GPU properly, m gonna have to find a good LGA 775 board which supports DDR2 RAM & has a PCI-e 2.0 slot. Even after doing all that, investing money on an already dead platform, i can OC my Q8400 to 3.2 GHz max. That's why m reluctant to do it. :\

Anyway, according to you, a Q8400 at 3.2 GHz vs an FX 4100 at 4.0 GHz (Hoping i could achieve this mild OC on that Gigabyte 880GM-D2H motherboard). Which would be better.? I already own that AMD Motherboard.

Isn't Ivy Bridge being phased out.? Haswell coming soon. Very soon. So buying an Ivy would be useless i'd guess. :\
Also, right now m unable to use my GPU properly for gaming. So i can't wait for Haswell release. I gotta decide soon.

Wait for Haswell, or go with a cheaper sandybridge CPU.

If i go for Sandy/Ivy/Haswell, m gonna have to buy new Motherboard too with the processor. Even buying a cheap ivy/sandy with a cheap mobo, i'll have to spend atleast 14k INR (~ $280)
That's TOO expensive compared to an FX 4100 or getting a newer mobo for my Q8400. An intel i series upgrade it out of my budget & hence out of the question. :\
