Workstation Boot Issues

We have a bunch of Compaq 6000 Pro Small Form Factor (HERE) which we first install an Image from the network then proceed to install the latest updates from Windows Update. Recently, we have had a couple of machines which fail to boot after installing the Windows Updates.

The machine downloads and installs 91 updates, then asks to restart. The machine then simply presents a black screen. After approx 20 seconds, the CPU fan and PSU fan ramp up as fast as they can go and stay like that. I cannot get into BIOS or boot from network to re-image them or anything. This has happend to the last couple machines which downloaded Windows Updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Must be one of the updates however, we can't keep trying the updates on the workstations as so far i've been unable to get the 3 machines working again. After powering them on, there is just a black screen - no options to enter BIOS, they are dead. If I can get these machines working again, I will go through the process of finding which update is causing the problem.

They don't show any sign of life at all? In that case I'd start with the standard troubleshooting like trying to get it to start with as little components as possible. 1 DIMM of RAM, use the onboard option for everything, unplug HDD and ODD.

There is life as in the CPU fan and PSU fan start spinning, but that is it. After approx. 20 seconds the fans ramp up full speed and thats it. There is also a green LED on the motherboard which comes on. We have a handful of these machines which I know are working and have swapped components out but still nothing.

Can a Windows Update really cause this? Last week and early this week I have been imaging the same workstations without any problems. Then all of a sudden, this started happening and have stopped until I find the problem.

It shouldn't be possible for an update supplied by Windows Update to make the machine entirely useless, but apparently it is. Like you said, you don't even get the option to enter the BIOS. To me this is a sign that the hardware is faulty.
