Due to a laptopcrash I have to get on with my old pc again. It's an old pc from 2006 and it has worked fine so far (currently working with him for a month or so).
However I still like to play some games and the current videocard just lacks the power. I had a highend laptop who could handle these things on high/medium easily, this pc cant even handle the games on low.

I have a M2N SLI Deluxe (Asus) motherboard. It has 2 PCIe x16 slots (plus some smaller ones but they dont care). Current Graphics Card is the old geforce7900. I have a 600w powersupply.

My question is as followed, I bought the XfX6670HD Radeon Videocard after some research online. It should be competable, however it has been years since I was in this whole pc building business (I used to be into this stuff and tweaked my pc quite often, however that stopped around 2008) I just might be plain wrong.
I tried the card but it didn't work. My pc just reboots after about being 10seconds on my desktop after logging in.
Also tried to run it on safe mode, then the system won't reboot but fails to recognize the card. The hardware wizard is coming up but says it can't recognize the item and trying to install the XfX drivers will just result in errors 'of not finding any xfx hardware'.
Any idea's what might be going on? Is the card corrupt or is my motherboard just way too old to handle that card? (or maybe even something else).

PS
For any other questions please dont hesitate to ask ;)

Solution
First thing you need to do is download the current driver from AMD - don't use the drivers on the card disc.

The completely uninstall the old nvidia drivers and the xfx drivers and use driver sweeper (here) to clean up the crud.

Shut down the pc, remove the nvidia card, install the radeon card and reboot. Then install the AMD drivers.

Edit: You may also need to update your bios. Sometimes pcie 2.1 cards have issues with the old pcie 1 slots.

Thanks! Have read about the bios update on several other posts but was hesitant because it could mean buying a new motherboard in the process...
Nevertheless I gave it a try and it were very tense minutes, I even screamed when he didn't get POST... until I found out the bootDriver was set to something different... :p
All works fine now, drivers installed and tested on some games, it all works good, I can have a good night sleep now tonight ;)
Thanks again!
