Help me decide. I fix computers locally(do my best), and I am about to invest some money in a machine that will scan multiple hard drives at once, run programs, and have available, MUCH browser windows. Im looking at these i7's and wandering 2011 vs 1155. Anyone make a case for AMD? I thought about scanning multiples on virtual machines. Any ideas or contributions appreciated. BTW-I dont really want to pay $1k for an Extreme version. Motherboard ideas? I like Asrock boards. I already have an i5 650 computer with one. Its really fast. I need to add more at once.

AMD's have been the best at VM's for a while, but Intel's are by far the fastest. You'll definitely need lots of threads for that workload. I would recommend either an AMD FX 8350 or and Intel i7-3930K. The intel will be a faster stock (despite the clock speed diference), but the AMD is ALOT cheaper. If you OC the Intel up (it is an unlocked multiplier), It'll be way faster than the AMD. The AMD may be better at some muli-threaded applications off the bat. It also has an unlocked multiplier, but I don't think they OC as well.

The LGA 2011 sockets are for the most expensive Intel CPU's. I believe it offers higher throughput.

I really Like ASROCK mobo's they have a TON of features, are rock solid, and aren't the most expensive. I always recommend them.

So, bottom line, an Intel will be faster at doing just about any simgle process, but might not be as good at doing something that requires 8 threads, as the AMD has 8 separate physical cores. However, the Intel has 12 threads.
