Freezing after i7 upgrade from i3 (First gen)

I recently upgraded from a i3 540 to a used i7 870 but ever since i put it in my freezes my PC when playing games. First when i got this and installed it i mildly oc'ed to 3.7 GHz, it would freezes commonly (a couple minutes in) when playing games, and when i say freeze, i mean gridlock my PC so that the keyboard and mouse don't work and i have to hold in the power button. So i assumed i oc'ed it wrong and i just put it to stock and used it. But now it randomly did the exact same thing (after maybe 3 hour of gameplay). This never happened when i had my i3. Also this is not a cooling issue, the display on my motherboard said it was at 30 Celsius when it crashed.

Here are my PC specs.

i7-870
(previous CPU) i3 540 oc'ed @ 3.9 ghz
600 watt Power supply (a cheap diablotek 2 years old).
4gb Corsair vengeance ram
EVGA p55le motherboard
EVGA Geforce 460 SE oc'ed to 800 core
3 SATA hardrives of various sizes
common DVD drive.
What do you guys think may be the problem?

have you made sure you did a bios update to your motherboard? As often they are for stability / support for newer processors.
where did the CPU come from, could it be faulty, bent mobo pins during the swap?

slim chance it could be power related as going to the i7 will have a larger power draw than the i3

I updated the bios and it still does the same thing afther a quick oc, so I loaded defaults and am going to test tommorow if it will do the same at stock. And as for the gpu, I put it to stock when I updated the bios, thought the gpu was at stock when the crash occured the cpu was oc'ed. As for the i7, whats is the likelyhood that I bought a faulty one or that the cpu is damaged?

Well i bought my CPU off of eBay and i still have the i3, its just a very long process with my setup to change CPU's, if i cant fix this i will change back to the i3. After my testing at stock CPU clocks tomorrow ill know if its the CPU and ill know for sure when i get a new psu which i need anyway because the psu ever sinse i bought it makes a loud noise on start up. What amount of wattage should be sufficient for my setup?

Something very odd just happened, since after the bios update the oc was still making my crash, i put it to stock and just used it. Yesterday it worked fine but today i was using it and all of a sudden, as if i held in the power button my PC just shut off, and no i didn't accidentally hit the power button on the power bar. Based on whats happening and yes i know i have already asked this but, is it the CPU or the psu? Because before i put it in this never happened.

Ok ill check the temps but im prety sure it aint temp related because the heatsink+fan is rated for a 135 watt cpu and the thermal past is correctly applied but ill check the temps anyway.

Left the i7 on prime 95, full load on all 8 treads on all night and it never crashed or shut down i guess now its either the gpu, motherboard or psu. But i think its the psu so I'm gonna get a new one and see how that goes. Anyway thanks to everyone who replied.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Randomly Freezes
No BSOD just random freezes with screen on and no keys or cursor repsond, all I can do is use a hard reset to restart. Then I get the standard windows was not shut down properly messege at start-up. I have been having this issue/s and have tried all the same standard help people have had to offer, in all the dfferent post I've read online.
To actually fix this issue I ended up having to go to the device manager and check for driver updates on all my devices, one at a time. I think the ones that had updates that fixed this issue were the ACPIx64-based PC under the computer drop down and the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers especially the ICH ATA and SATA AHCI ontrollers (I think these made the difference). I checked them all, but these were the only ones that had updates. Once those were updated and the computer was restarted, it has stayed on. It's been on for a day now and no problems so far.
