Hi all,

Hopefully posting this in the right section of the forum! I have slightly-old Compaq laptop with Windows Vista on it, and I've tried Windows 8 and it's just awful and unintuitive to use on a laptop. I don't think you can remove the Windows 8 Start screen, so I've had a serious look at some Linux distribution I could try instead. Anyone have any personal favourites you would recommend? I'm looking at Linux Mint but there are so many to choose from I thought it'd be easier to ask and see what others recommend.

Thanks.

An relatively easy distro to start with is Ubuntu. You could look into that. Or you could just look for some that seem to fit your needs and just try it. It's free after all.

Ps: you can use Classic Start to get the start menu back in Windows 8.

My best advice for new Linux users is stick to one of the mainstream distros such as Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Debian. Not necessarily because they are the best or easiest to use but because they have masses of support. Once you are familiar with Linux and how thing work you can consider moving to something else (or not!).

Linux Mint is a good choice. Easy to use, popular and plenty of support. I'd go for the the KDE version of that.
