Hi Guys,

I just bought a new build and put everything together to realise that my HD doesnt connect.

I have an IDE Hard Drive from my old computer and the motherboard doesnt have the ribbon molex connectors...so do i need to go out an get a SATA hard drive or is there a way to make this work?

Much love!

Like you said, there's no IDE connector on your motherboard. So no, as it is now, you cannot get it to work.

You probably mean that you bought a PCI-e graphics card. The PCI-e slots aren't only used for that. You can also put sound, network and RAID cards in it.

My advice to you is to read reviews about hard disks and get a SATA drive that suits your needs.

An SSD isn't necessary in a lot of cases. Sure, it makes the system feel really smooth, but you don't want it for large amounts of storage.

Besides, we don't even know the rest of the OPs PC. Personally I wouldn't put an SSD in a low end machine (not saying the OP has a low end system).

By all means have another drive for storage but I'd want an SSD for the C drive myself. We don't know the use, if it's light use a normal SATA could be ok, yeah. Personally, for my use I wouldn't go without an SSD but I am a "power user" I suppose...

Don't get me wrong, I love SSDs too. I have one in all of my systems and wouldn't want to go back to an HDD for boot and main apps, but I wouldn't place one in a system that does little more than some MS Word and Youtube.

It will be predominantly in a cheap gaming pc:
i5 3570k
radeon 7850
8g ram
cheap mobo

It wont be my main computer in terms of storage because i have my laptop for that...

im really just wondering if i can use my old IDE hard drive or if i need to get a 60G ssd/500g sata..because i cant seem to figure out how to connect the hard drive to my motherboard..

same thing with my old DVD drive...it also had the ribbon connector, so do i need to replace that as well?

With such a system I wouldn't even consider using an IDE drive. Do yourself a favor and get a 128GB SSD if you think it's worth the price. You can get a 500GB-1TB HDD for storage.

Also replace the DVD drive. They hardly cost anything these days.

I agree with Thomas, forget the IDE drive. It'll just totally ruin your system.
However, if you're installing games you're going to need some storage. Maybe try a hybrid drive, I use one of those at work and its not bad at all.

I just want to find out whether or not i can physically connect it to my computer now or whether i have to wait 3 days till i have time to go out to the shops and get a new DVD drive and HD. I know an IDE drive is pretty rubbish for modern computers but i wanna see if i can get it to work tonight rather than waiting 3 days

I doubt any modern motherboards have IDE bus on them. You might be able to get an PCI card with IDE on it as Thomas suggests but that's a trip to the shops anyway and you're throwing money after old tech at the end of the day so probably not the most economical option.
