Hi,

On Wednesday, I used my Acer Aspire One D270 Netbook for close to 5 hours with Internet and it ran fine (Browser Firefox).

I decided to turn it off during lunch and after 30 minutes it refused to log me back in..

Win 7 (ultimate 32 bit) hangs on Welcome screen, going around in circles.. Did hard reboot but didnt help..

I even received an error which did not even let me log on but I rebooted again and it went away..

Suprisingly the Netbook which is meant to run Win 7 has Windows Xp in C: drive. It didnt load there either..

Did some think back and suspected ESET Smart Security version 3.0 update which I did may be the problem, managed to get to safe mode and restarted. This time netbook loaded after a while at the Welcome screen, but was as slow as a snail. After over 1 hour of uninstall time I removed ESET Smart Security version 3.0.

Restarted netbook and the battery drained after 30-45 minutes while still Win 7 still hanged on Welcome screen..

What could be the problem? I have seen other threads but most are for PC.. This is a netbook , is that a problem? Any issue with hardware/OS/Memory or Graphics?

What else should I try out?

Thanks for any suggestions.. Please spare the sarcasm.. This is my only access to Internet.

More like starting a OS install, then selecting "repair an existing installation" during the wizard. That way you lose only the OS updates, but not the programs and settings.

Currently I dont have a USB Bootable stick to get that option.. Anything else I can try like:

Chkdsk in Safe Mode or SFC / Scannow .. Uninstall Graphics drivers, Firefox or some application?

I am puzzled why XP didnt load either.. It takes a while to load .. but runs fine..

Can there be any power issues? Netbook has a 6-Cell battery and stores 5 hours of power. tks.

You can try to do a chkdsk using parameters, like
chkdsk x: /f/r where X is the drive/partition you need checked.

If both OSes don't load, it could be the HDD is failing. How old is the system? Usually can get about 5-6 years out of a commercial quality HDD before it starts going downhill. Your mileage, of course, may vary.

"Suprisingly the Netbook which is meant to run Win 7 has Windows Xp in C: drive. It didnt load there either.."
Where is Windows 7? D: ? It's a 320 gb hdd, you'd need to have Windows 7 on the larger partition.
The hdd is probably faulty as the netbook is not really a good example of a multiboot sytem with only 1gb of ram.

Edit- how did XP get on this netbook?

Off a bootable XP usb drive. I know its lame, but i only had Xp on hand to load then.
I now have every damn thing from win 98 to win 8 .. lol..

Ok.. I managed a few step and wasted hours on possible tips to get it on track..

None worked. Formatted C & D drive ( xp and 7 ) .. Tried installing 7 in c off a bootable usb that took 12 hours to expand windows files. I gave up staring at it and left it running.. I freaked out to see a Win 7 mimic sitting when i returned with gui of win 7 and icons of pc tools used commonly. I said WTF.. Turned it off .. 18 hours is stressful..

Restarted.. Loading windows was slow. Next came setup updating regirtry. It sat there again.. I replugged the pen drive. Yeah, my bad!!!. Next, completing windows sat around doing nothing.. I got mad and turned it off. Deciding to try after dinner...

Nightmare.. Windows wants itself reintalled.. F***** up windows.. Back to square 1.

Now, windows taking this long to install? I loaded a few times off hdd, it installs in 1 hour flat or less.. Why 12 +++++ hours?..

Some say after Windows restarts for 1st time usb needs to be removed during install.. True?..

Before this incident, win 7 loaded on startup in 5 secs and all progs settled in 30 secs.

Please help.. BTW netbook has 2 gb ram.. ;-)

Is the hdd still partitioned? What iare the sizes of each partition?

Considering that you had Win 7 not on C: and now you install on C: drive, there must be a heap of hidden partitions pertaining to the previous install. Basically, you need to delete all partitions (including hidden partitions, use Full format with install OS disk, it gives you the option to delete partitions), only use 1 partiton (meaning zero) for Windows 7 x32, forget about the other Oses, go buy a cheap PC for them.

Sorry for not being available..

Handed the netbook over to a tech.

He formatted C and D drive. Deleted C partition of 20 gb. D now became C and has 30 gb.. Reinstall of win 7 took 21 hours !!!

Still netbook is slow. Ran Western Digital DLGDIAG tool. Did quick test.

It cleared the test and Pass status.. Does it mean drive is ok?

What else can cause such a slow speed and performance.. I have not even installed anything after reinstall.. Annoying ;-(

Windows 7 needs 20gb just to install, no wonder it took so long.

When you install games or applications to the other partition, the temp files are still stored on the C: drive, the Application Data is still on the C: drive, as well as virtual memory. Many games and applications also store data in the Documents folder. When browsing the interent, temp files of each web page is stored on the C: drive. Youtube also stores data on the C: drive. Sleep mode data is stored on the C: drive, hibernation uses 10% of the volume. Actually, you should disable Hibernation so that the the space is not held in Reserve.

Also, your GPU uses the C: drive for virtual ram.

C: Drive should be the larger of the two partitions.

You need to acquire an external hdd for storing your data and just use the internal disk for your OS.

If your system crashes, your data is not lost, it's still there, even if the disk is faulty or bad sectors, you can recover up to 99% of the data using the hdd as a slave to another PC.

I don't think that SATA like S.M.A.R.T enabled but I'd need to check that.

Windows 7 requires 25% free space so if your hdd is 160gb then you should have 64gb of free space available.

Indexing for D: drive should be disabled, if the hdd is SSD then you can disable indexing for the OS drive as well.

Damn.. Its like that? ...

It was fine for over 7 months.. I last loaded win 7 from hard disk ..

It took 3 hours.. But performance wise it was good..

All of a sudden there has been this sudden deterioration in performance..

Gonna call Acer.. I did reinstall as they asked..
20 hours is crazy..

Honestly does anyone believe if there is any issue with the drive as few have pointed? Tks.

Most likely the hdd is worn out, too much extreme usage with so little free space everything is crammed too tightly, the free space would be in scattered clumps and its now too tired to perform well.

Virtual space is usually the fartherest point away from the data and if you don't have adequate space there, the data is too close, the virtual space is then scattered into different clusters and overlapping sectors meaning that the OS has to look everywhere for the information.

Good call Lieutenent.. Still 10 years of PC usage.. Never came across such incident.. Guess cant expect much off netbooks.. Eh?

So 170 gb u think is good for Win 7?

I am planning to get 64 gb SsD only for Win 7.. Is that enough? Ssd is expensive..

You'd need to check the manufacturer website as to whether the Notebook can handle SSD and what volume is accepted.

I've got a Samsung Netbook, it only allows Windows 7 x32, and as much as a 320 gb hdd.

A netbook does not have a CD/DVD drive whereas a Notebook would have a CD/DVD drive however, conventional Notebooks (as they used to be) either have RW for the DVD or CD but not both, one of them is a ROM.

Nowadays, all laptops are called Notebooks because the higher authority don't want people putting it on their lap.

SSD 64gb is not really good, might be okay if your Notebook accepts SSD and youonly use the Notebook for browsing and basic Office apps but not fo rgaming or video editing etc...

A 64 gb SSD is the raw volume, not formatted so it would really be only about 56gb ~.

Trust me.. I have all data in Desktop.

Will backup everything soon on 1 tb seagate backup plus.

my objective is to determine if its hd failure so, it can be replaced as netbook still is in warrnty..

Your views have given me additional option to handle a netbook..

By the way, a simple Safe mode boot took

Some new ideas brought to light.. Will keep them at the back of my head..

I too think its better to strip things off a hd and let it run for performance.

Safe mode without any softwares or drivers took.over 30 mins.. Some thing is definitly wrong..

Well Gonna call Acer and see what they make of it.. Clean reinstall was there idea by the way.

Try the Run Command
CHKDSK /F
For the other partition drives, you'd need to specify the drive letter
CHKDSK /F D:

Sometimes you can use CHKDSK /F \ALL
for all drives but it was an option for DOS based systems that does not seem to work well in later OSES.

The /F option is a quick fix and may take about 1 minute but as much as 20 minutes however if you use the /R option instead of /F, it is a longer process and may take anything up to two hours, depending on the state of the hard drive. Use /F first, it usually does the trick.

I turned on the netbook.. It kept giving long beeps..

I turned it off and back on.. And.. Damn.. It booted up in under 5 secs.. How did that happen..

PC operations and file transfer rate normal.. Is that RAM issue?.. My friend says hard drive is fine.

I am confused now.. Just was about to take it to a service center.. i am lost..
