Your using an ADSL router.
In the router there will be settings that relate to your ISP account that have to be filled in to allow the router to connect to the service. And also the connection type. There should be a section for that inside the new routers menus.
You should be able to obtain this information off your old Adsl modem.
To do with your account name and login password.
Once you have them you will need to login to the new router you bought and place them in there.
The led light on the front of the router should let you know if it connected to the Isp and is online.
The Mac address does relate to each device on the network, but a Username, and password may still be required to connect to the service.

Change your router's internet connection type to PPPoE and provide the user name and password. Get with your ISP if you don't know them.

Did your router come with a cd and instructions? Follow them. If not try this.

Hook your pc up to the router, open your browser and type in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. It will ask you for a password, I think on dlink you either leave it blank or type in "admin" without the quotes. You'll have to the find the place in the setup portion that has the internet connection type. There should be a dropdown choice for PPPoE. Then it will have places to fill in the information. Good luck.

Oh, sorry, I'm giving you instructions for a regular router, not a dsl router. Please ignore my suggestions and contact your isp or find someone on this site with experience with those routers. I don't have it. Sounded like Shaun o knew what he was talking about. Sorry.
