Computer Won't Power On

Hello, I'm having a problem that I am unsure where to start with. For the last week or so during gaming, the computer would just restart without warning (as if it lost power and was turned back on instantly. No Windows shutting down screens). This could be 5 minutes in or three hours in. When it came back on, I would get a message from the motherboard stating that the surge protected was triggered to protect the system from damage and rarely (maybe 1/10 times) it would say something about the CPU.

But as of this morning, having made no changes to hardware or anything, my computer simply won't turn on. The green light on the motherboard is lit while powered, but nothing happens when I press the button on the front. However, I've managed to determine that if I turn the power off at the back or unplug it, and press the power on button on the front immediately after turning the power back on, the led will come on for less than a second and go off again. Also during this I can see the CPU fan starting to spin, but can't even make a full rotation before it goes off again.

Specs; (can get more if needed)
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
AMD FX-6100 (not overclocked)
8 GB RAM (PATRIOT)
Nvidia GTX 550 Ti
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
750W CiT (generic) PSU

Thanks for any help given.

I do not currently have a spare, but there's a repair shop nearby, so I can probably ask them to try one of theirs inside it to see if that is the problem. I wouldn't mind the excuse to pick up a modular PSU anyway.
So I'll probably do that unless anyone else can think of anything otherwise.

yeah you do that.and if you buy a new PSU try to go with a well knowed brand.also there maybe a problem with your electric supply to the PSU as ive been running on a generic PSU for 5 years and nothing has happened to me :D

Something.. odd just happened. I turned the plug on at the wall, and because it's in a awkward location, I held it in the middle by accident. So I got the usual sparking sound from the plug, which didn't seem to damage anything (nothing went bang, to say the least). But upon pressing the power button on the PC to see if I would still get the usual flash on-off the power stayed on. So I didn't want to get too excited, incase it was just a one-off, so turned it off, and turned it on again to check. Perhaps I didn't notice the first time, or it just didn't happen, but there was a bright yellowish light coming from the PSU (only noticed from a reflection from the case onto the desk). So I panicked, and turned the power off at the wall to try prevent damage, and just hoped my surge protector on my MoBo is still in shape. Do you think it would be worth turning it on again to be 100% that it's coming from the PSU (though I'm fairly sure, as I said, I panicked) or just leaving it as it's probably the most likely? I can only think of the PSU as something to start sparking. Anyway, I think we have confirmed the culprit, yes?

yes indeed we have. best for you to replace it as soon as possible and get a 450-500 watt PSU well known brand. and again i suggest you to check the wall plug you use for the PSU. maybe it had a role frying the PSU in the first place.
