HD7770 causes pc to power up, but not boot

Hi

I'm trying to install a HD7770. Currently I have a HD5450, and it runs fine. However, if I take it out and put in the 7770, the pc will power up (fans on etc etc, including 7770 fan), but the pc will not boot and all of my USB devices won't power up.

However, if I leave the 7770 in and take the 6 pin connector out, the computer will boot (but obviously no display).

The PSU is a Winpower (?) ADK-750, and the motherboard is a FOXCONN H55M-S.

What's going on?

Solution
Your "PSU" is actually a PSU-shaped object, with a liar-label stuck on it. It is not capable of supplying even the minimal power needed by the HD7770.
A 380W Antec Earthwatts or 360W Seasonic SSR-360GP would have no trouble running your rig.

As little power as the HD7770 needs, it is also possible you got a bad card. Do you have another PC to test it in, or a PSU you can put in your PC?

Hahaha well said! And yeah, no better than junk, get a quality unit. But a 500W will leave some upgrade room if you like...

I feared as much, which leads me to ask: is it difficult to swap a PSU (I've only ever swapped RAM and cards), and would an OCZ CoreXStream 500w be sufficient?

Unfortunately, I don't have another PC to test it in. And my spare PSU isn't any better, it's CASECOM ATM 500w...

Thanks

The OCZ is fine. And swapping out a PSU is easier than anything else, just plug in where you plugged out.

Brilliant, thanks guys. Fastest solution to an issue I've ever had! A store near me has it in stock, so I'll grab it tomorrow and I'll report back what happens.

Nice. Quick and easy is good.
Oh, and if by chance this doesn't fix your problem, you will not have wasted your money; that Winpower needed to go before it killed something. Since you just got the HD7770, you should be able to exchange it if it doesn't work.

Yes, a bad card could prevent booting. Put in the old card, then uninstall all of its drivers. Power off, install the new card, and see what happens.
Like I said though, you did not waste your money replacing your PSU, and may have saved yourself a lot of grief down the road.

Hi

I've sent a message about sending the card back, but I've seen a lot of people saying the psu I bought might not handle the gpu because it has a split 12v rail. Could it actually still be the power supply??

Thanks

Thank god for that. This is slowly driving me insane!
