Can a CPU compatible with Intel's PLGA771 socket work with the LGA771 socket?

I have a Dell Precision 490 that has a bad motherboard. I may be able to acquire a Precision T5400 with a working motherboard, but it's doesn't have a CPU. So I'm wondering if I can take the Xeon X5365 processors and plug them into the T5400's motherboard. The problem is that as far as I can tell, the CPUs designed for the T5400 support the LGA771 socket type. Since the X5365 is the PLGA771 socket type, I'm not sure the CPU will be compatible with the T5400's motherboard.

I can't find good specs on the T5400 motherboard itself, so I'm working backwards from what I know about the CPUs.

Any chance that I can use my X5365 processors in the T5400's motherboard? If the two sockets are compatible, is there anything else I need to look at for CPU/motherboard compatibility?

That's definitely odd, because here it is only revering to X5200 and X5400 and moreover says it support PCI-E 2.0 instead of 1.1. I'm confused. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/server-chipsets/server-chipset-5400.html

I agree, but money doesn't grow on trees, unfortunately. I'm also stuck with 32 GB of DDR2 RAM that I can't put in a new motherboard, so I'd have to buy that too. And Dell has proprietary power supply connectors, so I might have to get a new PSU also.

I've been trying to figure out what to do since my 490 went bad; I can get a T5400 for $45 (maybe less) so that seems like a no-brainer.

That's odd. I didn't think the chipset would be a problem since the Intel link in my post for the X5365 says the Intel 5400 chipset is compatible. And check out the "Compatible Products" section for the 5400 chipset: http://ark.intel.com/products/34474/Intel-5400-Memory-Controller The X5365 is listed there.

No it doesn't but selling older components and picking up newer ones should afford you a newer build within the same budget. Considering that DDR2 still sells well on eBay, you should be able to get rid of it relatively easily.

Okay, so maybe it does; maybe it doesn't. It sounds like it's not worth the risk, anyway. Thanks for your help. I'll mark yours as the answer.

My original concern was the PLGA771 socket, but I have gathered that the just means "plastic" LGA771, so I'm assuming the sockets are compatible. But, with the doubt about the chipset compatibility, I'll pursue another solution.

That's not a bad idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I've got a couple of 470's lying around too. Maybe I can scrounge up enough to build a new one.
