How Do I Move Data Between Two PS3 HDDs?

My problem is that I need to move the memory from my fat, broken older generation PS3's HDD to my slim, new generation PS3's HDD. This would be simple if the older generation PS3's HDDs could fit into the newer generation PS3 that I have. All I would have to do is pop in my old HDD, and all would be well, but unfortunately they aren't able to fit in the new models, forcing me to take the contents of my old HDD and put them on the new HDD that can fit into the new generation PS3. I'm not too sure how to do this operation, and that is why I turn to you, the good people of Tom's Hardware, to grant me your wisdom

Solution
The hard drives should transfer between the two machines. They are standard 2.5" after all. However when you got the hard drive into the new slim it would need to be reformatted before it could be used. A external hard drive or flash drive is needed to move the files. Some of the files are locked to the machine and can't be copied.

Oh, I probably should have told you that the old PS3 that I have is broken beyond repair, so I can't use that for this operation. Could I, perhaps, hook up the old HDD to my PC and see if I can move its contents to the new PS3 via flash drives?

I guess I could try finding an old model of the PS3 just for this operation, and then give it back afterwards. The problem is that old models of the PS3 seem to be quite the rarity these days because many of them have broken down by now like mine for example. I'll just have to ask my friends if they still have one that survived and hope for the best. Once I have that, it won't be too hard to just do what you told me to do with some flash drives. There seems to be nothing more that you can tell me now. Thanks for being the one guy who tried to help. I really do appreciate it, and I mean it.

By "want to reformat it" do you mean it will force me to wipe my entire hard drive? Because if that's the case then it really does look like I'm out of options here.

That would be fantastic, but affroman112 is saying that my PC would not be able to read the contents. Are you certain that it would work for me? Also, I'm using Windows 7 if that matters.

As far as I know, the PS3 uses a proprietary format and can't be read by PC's. You may be able to use a USB dock and hang the drive off of it. I've never attempted this other than on fat32 formatted drives which I use to copy my ps3 game saves to and make backups with.

old HDD was not recognized by my PC. Eh, I've fooled around with this for a while now, and I really do think that there is no way my old PS3's data can be transferred to my new one. I've sort of come to terms with this. Still, I really don't want to have to restart my Borderlands characters, so is there anyway I can get a save file of a higher level character off the internet and transfer it to my new PS3 via a flash drive?

Edit: I got the save files on a flash drive, and the flash drive is recognized by my PS3, but the save files never show up, so I can't sopy them on. I've searched around for a solution to this, but none that I tried have worked. I'm just going to make a new thread for this seeing as I now have a new problem that doesn't necessarily related to my previous one that much.
