my external hdd is not working

my external hdd(seagate free agent go 320gb) is not been detected by the computer the only thing that happens is the light on the hdd is blinking its not showing in my computer, device man ,disk man or anywhere else

This can happen if the USB Port doesn't supply enough power to the drive. You could try (or borrow) a "Y" cable with two USB connections at the PC and one to the drive. One PC port is used for Power and Data; the other only for power. Together they provide enough power for the drive.

thanks for ur solution but i have tried unpacking the hdd from the case and i plugged it directly to the pc as we plug in an internal hdd but still it doesn''t work

One more thing you can try-

start a cmd.exe prompt as adminstrator

Then type "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" <enter>
then type "devmgmt.msc"
"
when the device manager opens, click view, then "Show Hidden Devices"

under disk drives, you may find ghosted devices from drives that you have used in the past. If you find one from the Seagate drive, you can delete it. If it's just a detection / driver installation problem, this might help.

googling the initio default controller results in alot of issues related to power. When you removed the drive from the enclosure, did you also connect it to the PC power supply (along with the sata cable)? If that it the case, then it sounds like the drive itself may be bad but the SATA to USB bridge card is still working (hence the initio controller with no drive)
