I am going to be needing to set up a home network connecting 2 PC's to a cable internet modem, and then to share 2 printers [one a Brother MFC with FAX capability; the other an Epson wide format inkjet] between those PC's.

The cable modem has only one RJ45 type port. Both PCs are running Win7 x64. Both have only one RJ45 LAN port. To begin with they both will be located in the same room. After a few months they will be located in separate rooms, but the network will still need to, be maintained.

While I'm not exactly sure what a router is, I'm probably going to need one, right?
That is about the extent of my knowledge about networking. can anyone guide me on this?

Sorry about taking so long to get back on this, but priorities took an abrupt change.
The rush is off.
Although, in a few months I will need to set up a wireless/wired network connecting 2 PCs in separate rooms and a home server.
This will be after moving from Alaska to Hawaii later this summer.
I still want to try connecting the 2 PCs, but do not need to connect the printers right now.
I have looked through the links, and think that I'm understanding a bit more about networks.

A few years ago I bought an "El Cheapo" 18-CD-G914-FB 4-Port Generic Router from Comp USA just before they closed their store here.
The set up instructions were so complicated and my knowledge was so lacking that I gave up on it in frustration.
I would like to show this thing who is boss and get it to working just long enough to say "There, sucker!"

It will allow an RJ45 WAN input with 4 - RJ45 outputs.
It should allow 2 PCs to share a cable i-net connection.
It will not accommodate the USB printers.
I still have the paper manual and the CD with the PDF manual on it for this router.
The manuals give setup instructions for 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP.

I assume that I should be able to adapt the setup instructions to Win7 without much trouble.
Correct?

Plus an off the wall question:
All my computer use has been in Alaska.
Humidity has not been any kind of a problem.
Hawaii will be another story.
Are there any practical caveats for dealing with high humidity and PCs, or is it even worth worrying about?

Just plug the i-net cable into the wan port and two cables to your pcs in the lan ports. If you have trouble with the setup, download a manual for a linksys router or any other well known brand. The configuration steps are basically the same for all routers, but the manuals for the well known brands are way better.
High humidity in Hawaii shouldn't be a problem.
