If I spend 5+ hours running chkdsk /R do I have to do that in every OS I use with that drive or does it only need to be done once in a while? I'm just confused on where the instructions to skip certain sectors is, on the drive - or in the OS?

Solution
Its in the drive. The sector is marked bad and unless you do a full format it will stay marked bad. A full format would retest the sector and leave it marked bad if it failed.

So it can be retested and possibly pass - which would mark it as good again?

One last question on the topic, does Windows "Quick Format" do this test when a person goes to install?
