When you clone a hard drive to a new drive is it an exact copy? As in, there is a set of blueprints of our house that we deleted off our older computer hard drive that i would now like to recover. when I clone this older hard drive which is a sata to my new SSD, will i be able to use recovery tools, like recuva, to try and recover the blueprints that were deleted off the old hard drive, or is only the current data thats on the drive thats cloned to the new drive? Also our older computer had windows xp and a windows password that I dont remember. The new computer has windows 8, which im still learning. My wife "thinks" she still remembers the password, will it still allow me to clone and access my files if I cant recall our windows xp password from the older hard drive? Thanks for any help. I am no computer expert but have come along way!

If there is any possibility of getting the files before you do any cloning, do that. There is no way to guarantee getting those 'deleted' files back out of a clone.

And I personally wouldn't clone from an HDD to an SDD.
Start fresh. Why bring along all the old cruft?

Maybe. Those are theoretically 'deleted' files (the house blueprints). I would try everything possible to recover them in their original environment before doing anything else.

Then again, I personally would just refer to my backup files.

Thanks for your input. I do think that I can access the original hard drive in question and just purchased a sata external mount kit from amazon where i can plug this hard drive into my computer now via usb and hopefully access the files without having to clone it. The computer it was in was physically broken a couple of years ago so we just kept the hard drive from it. So i guess the only questions I have left are, when I connect this hard drive to my computer via usb will it ask me for my windows xp password? So i can simply use a program like recuva to scan this particular new external drive to look for my blueprints?
Thanks for all the help guys

Won't ask you for the xp password unless you encrypted your files. Hope you didn't do that as it could get messy. May have to take "ownership" of the users folder. You don't need an external usb connection, you can open the case and hook it to an available sata port and power supply.

Right. But remember, the degree of difficulty here is that the OP hoping to recover files (blueprints for his house) that have been 'deleted' on the original system.
i.e. marked for overwriting...

Obviously, the most reliable solution is to try to recover them in the original environment. If that isn't possible, anything else is a crapshoot.
