After a couple of years with 6GB, I've been noticing that I'm occasionally running quite close to that at times and thought, memory being so cheap, that now might be a reasonable time to upgrade it. My current thought is to get a 12GB kit, but, after spending all day reading up to try to figure out what frequency I should get, I still feel relatively lost.

To reiterate the details, the motherboard is an X58-UD3R (revision 2.0) and the processor is an i7 930 at 2.80 GHz.

I don't typically have the time needed to deal with overclocking anything, so it's all running at whatever the BIOS's default/auto settings are, with the current memory set to the XMP profile (Which is I think the right thing to be doing, assuming I don't want to fiddle with settings any more than I strictly need to. If not, I would love to know that too.).

As an addendum, I've had some weird issues with the current three sticks. I've run extensive tests on each one, one at a time in the first slot and in the slots they usually sit in with no problems, but I've had routine weirdness on cold boots with crashes and windows losing track of some of the memory. After a few false starts, the problems normally go away, and I rarely turn off the PC, so it's not a huge issue, but if anyone happens to know how to avoid that, I'd love to know - I've seen some vague talk of problems with certain memory sticks and this motherboard before, but that's it.

This is the kit I'm currently using:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231225&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

When I looked into it, apparently 1600MHz is not technically supported by the UD3Rrev2 (though oddly, it supports 1033 and 2200). So that might presumably be part of the problem.

From what I read, it sounded as though there's some calculation involving bus speed or something similar that suggests that memory frequencies above a certain threshold aren't worth buying for a given bus speed. I spent quite a while trying to figure it out, but never got a firm understanding.

To be clear, I'm not talking about adding memory - I was just going to replace it wholesale with a new kit.

You have a strange QVL there, the 1600MHz kits listed are all dual channel which I find strange.
I used Crucial's memory finder to find a 3 channel kit and here are two of the options they give 12GB kit (4GBx3), Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 or 12GB kit (4GBx3), Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800
Using GSkill's I could not find your motherboard listed
I also tried Corsair and found these options 12GB 3x4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz and 12GB 3x4GB Corsair XMS3 2000MHz
Are you looking for faster ram or just a decent 3x4 kit? Which I think I have a few options there - all guaranteed to work properly on your motherboard
