I have a hp xw4400 workstation desktop computer, and it has a 2.4 ghz dual core cpu, 4gb of ram, and the standard graphics card with 512mb ram. I tried playing Cod:WAW and it lagged too much on the lowest settings. If I upgraded the graphics card to the EVGA - GeForce GT 640 2GB DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 Superclocked Graphics Card would it play it better? Also I don't know if it will fit my motherboard, has anyone tried it? Heres the link http://www.bestbuy.com/site/EVGA+-+GeForce+GT+640+2GB+DDR3+PCI+Express+3.0+Superclocked+Graphics+Card/5608277.p?id=1218672937529&skuId=5608277&ky=2oh0NrwOl4j1qjMx3Oy2gXfVGhMUl0WiJ&utm_campaign=bazaarvoice&utm_medium=SearchVoice&utm_source=RatingsAndReviews&utm_content=Default#tab=specifications

sure it will use that gpu... but for 100 i'd get an hd 7750 over the 640. the 640 is a pretty mediocre web browsing "office computer" card. the hd 7750 is the a very minimum gaming level card, if you insist on nvidia get a 650ti boost.

sidenote. NONE of the cards i just listed will ever utilize 2 gb of video ram. please don't waste your money on a 2gb card, like you see bent on doing with that 640. there is no way in hell a 650ti boost can use 2gb of vram, at most it will use most of 1gb... which mean the 640 won't ever come close to using just 1gb.

call of duty is mostly cpu dependent... so no... probably not. you'll see a massive improvement in gameplay... but no... think of it this way. you'll go from not being able to play at all, to playing at highest settings on lowest resolutions (1024x768)... and medium or low settings on higher resolutions.

the bottleneck for you in that game will be your cpu once you upgrade the gpu.

you don't know what you're talking about.

pci-e is a backward compatible format. a pcie 3.0 card will work in pcie 1.1 or 1.0 just fine.

that said the gpus will probably be bottlenecked by the motherboard a bit. how much depends.

1. you may want to review all the other threads about PCI-E compatibility issues. I can add some experience especially with workstations to it
2. you may want to read something about the way a graphics card uses it's memory for texture caching

dude. there were ocmpatability issues with pci-e 1.0 divices on pci-e 1.1 setups. that most certainly happened. pci-e 1.1 is unique because of that (no other pci-e format had such issues)... that said to the best of my knowledge, and plenty of google searching, there apeares to be no backward compatability issues with pci-e 1.1...

i would appreciate being linked to such info if it exists, as i'm well aware i don't know everything. but at this point in time, i'm unaware and have successfully used pci-e 2.0 and 3.0 devices on a pci-e 1.1 slot.

between my own anecdotal evidence and failure to turn up any such reports in google searching, i simply have to ask for you to provide a source on that one.

i hope you're not paying more then $10 for that gpu. I know of a pc recycling place downtown which sells junk gpus like that for like 5-15 a shot. heck, another place has given me cards like that just to get rid of them (which i then use to update my church's office computers so those old P4's can run windows 7)

and yes. your computer will run that gpu just as well as it would have run a hd7750. just don't expect to game with a hd6450...

Alright nvm, today has been a great day. My dads best friend is giving me a quad core 3Ghz computer with 6GB of ram and he is helping me pick out the graphics card, it has a PCI express 2.0 x16 slot. Its a pretty beefy machine and I love the sound of it. He is giving it to me for educational, and entertainment purposes, he wants me to learn more about hardware and play some high end games. So, I won't be using the XW4400 anymore. Do you have any suggestions for a video card around $100 for it?
