Powersupply problems or Overheating?

Hello,

I recently (past 7 months) built my computer from ground up.

MSI Z77a-G45 motherboard
Intel i5-3550
Gtx 550ti
8gb ram
Coolmax 600 watt PS 80+
Windows 8

Nothing crazy crazy, but definitely an upgrade for me.

I say all that to say- everything has worked fine up to this past week. I've been playing Fallout 3 New Vegas and Just Cause 2 and during intense portions of the games (like during a shootout or a lot of movement) my computer just turns off entirely.

My first thought was- heat issue, so I moved the computer to a cooler spot in the room.

I checked the temp and recorded the highest temps for each item after 30mins+ of game play

Motherboard- 55C

CPU- 57C

GPU- 75C

Hardrive- 29C

So, after looking at these specs, I find it hard to believe heat is causing these power offs.

I've checked and rechecked any wires that might be touching the GPU,- basically my computer hasn't moved in 7 months-..

So here's my question to the community,

Does this sound like a PSU issue?
What are your thoughts??

Try running some tests using certain components such as prime95 and some GPU stress tests. Unless your PSU is a few years old or you use it all the time, I have a hard time believing it is a PSU related problem. I had the same problem with a really crappy computer and it was heat related even though the internal temps were ok. You may be due for an internal clean, get yourself a can of compressed air and try to clean the inside of your computer, keep the wires out of the way and see if that helps at all.

Thanks for the reply.

I've never tried Prime95 before, i'm assuming it's safe?
And yes I've cleaned out the computer- it really wasn't that dusty to begin with but what little dust existed is now gone.

I'll try a few stress tests and see what comes up. Thanx

You may as well try it while its still within 2 months... No use on wasting youre money, the 2nd one might work for a few years. Wost case senario youd buy a new one if the 2nd one doesnt last long.

I thought i'd give an update--

Turns out it was the power supply.

I plugged in a new OCZ 750 ZT and it's purring like a kitten. I've tested several games on it, and maxed them out to allow for higher power usage- an hour later, i'm still gaming.

I've dealt with bad GPU's before, and I've dealt with CPU throttling so I know what that looks like- this was something else entirely. So i took a shot with the PSU and thankfully I lucked out.

Thanks for the help!
