Put together a build a few months ago consisting of:

AMD FX 8150
MSI 970a board
CM Gemin II 524
GTX 660 ti
Intel SSD
Thermaltake TR 600w
Samsung Bluray Drive

Well, hardware monitor and fan speed were giving me odd temp readings for several months. The core seemed to stay quite cool, but one of the TMPIN readings would seem to get very hot (TMPIN0?), but I wasn't sure if that was even accurate, as I would on occasion get outlandish readings that weren't remotely possible.

So a few weeks ago I was playing BF3 for the longest I've ever played it (still only maybe 90 min) when all of a sudden the gameplay got very sluggish. I figured maybe my PC was throttling down due to heat, so I exited the game and checked the core temps on my desktop. I think all of them were around 55 degrees or so. Then the next moment my PC immediately shut off by itself. I remember the power LED light blinking a bit, but nothing would turn on.

I unplugged it and gave it half an hour to cool, then crossed my fingers and plugged it back in. Hit the power switch. Nothing. No LED light even, it was absolutely dead. I figured the power supply was shot so I replaced it with a Corsair TX750. Nope, still dead, and both power supplies were later tested as being good.

I replaced the motherboard with an ASUS M5A97 and now the case, CPU and GPU fans power on, and I'm getting LED lights fired up, but it's not beeping, posting, or providing any video signal.

Did I somehow destroy both the motherboard AND the CPU?

If you just bought it, request an RMA.
Also, take motherboard temperature readings with a grain of salt - they generally aren't very accurate at all. Stick with CoreTemp.

Edit: Also note that the M5A97 had a CPU support BIOS update - 0705. If it's an old board, you might want to check that.
