CPU responsible for system freezes?

My PC seems to freeze randomly after a few hours. Also I have massive frame drops in games.
I have just upgraded my mainboard and cpu.
After that it started freezing up and showing fps drops in games that recover after about 15 seconds.
First, I suspected the mainboard not being able to support my CPU (AMD FX 8320) and swapped it for an ASUS M5A88 EVO.
That did not cure the problem. Then I swapped the memory for some memory with ASUS compatibility for this board.
I still have the problem and I am running out of ideas,
The whole rest of the system ran absolutely smooth on my old system with an AMD X4 955.
Is there any chance of the CPU causing this although, apart from that, running normal?
All temps are absolutely normal, stress tests are running without problems.
Apart from that I have a bequiet! dark series 650W power supply, radeon 7870 OC
GFX card, and system disk on SSD, data disk 2TB Seagate Barracuda.

Any idea guys? Thanks in advance, I am desperate....

Right. Mainboard was updated in the process, no changes. Good idea with the SSD, never thought of that. Did it last night and will see. Memcheck was done with both memory sets, no problems. same for GFX and CPU stresstests (furburn and prime95).
And yes, both HDD and SSD were installed when i put on windows.
