With my current pc build, I can only get around 25 to 35 fps on med settings for Skyrim. I really want to be able to play on high settings with an ENB Mod and have much better fps. Also, looking forward to playing Rome 2 Total War and of course, want to be able to play with large unit scales and on high settings.

Current Build Windows 7 64 Bit

Intel Core 2 Due E8400 3.0GHz, 133FSB Dual Core 6000K
ASUS P5Q P45 1600FSB,PCI Express, 1 Gb motherboard
Geforce 9800GTX 512 Mb PCI EXpress 16x dual head graphics card
500 GB Maxtor/Seagate 7200rpm SATA UDMA 300 32m Cache hard drive
Samsung 20x DVD Recorder Dual Layer
4 g memory

Updated Build Cost $720

AMD FX 4130 3.8 ghz quad core
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
1TB Western Digital Black Hard Drive
8 Gig DDR3 1600 mhz ram
Asus HD7790-dc2oc-1gd5 Video Card 128 bit PCI-E 3.0
Using the power supply, fan, and case from old build.

I was thinking of replacing the ASUS HD7790 with the GeForce GTX 650 Ti or GeForce GTX 660 due to Nvidia's recent price drop on these 2 cards. Any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated

Firstly, upgrade your AMD processor the 4350 if you want to go AMD, which is perfectly fine. If you want to go intel, grab the 3220. Next, if you can afford a GTX 660, throw that out. Go for the 7870- the cheapest GTX 660 is only 20$ less than the 7870, which happens to dance circles around the 660. It would also help if we could see exactly what motherboard you are wishing to buy.

ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

I'm a bit confused about choosing between the gtx 660 and the 7870. It appears the 7870 performs slightly better in most games but not Skyrim and only slightly better in shogun 2 total war. This month's article is saying the gtx 660 is the better card due to its new price at $200. I am already stretching it at $200 and prefer to spend $150 to $170 on a graphics card.

Thanks so much for the input so far.

Well it would appear that your motherboard doesn't need any changes, it's fine exactly the way it is. Go ahead and get the 660 if you so desire. You'll see a definite increase of performance from the 7790.
