Trouble With Two HDDs

A friend has two different laptops with what I think to be dead HDDs. This coming from the information I have received. Laptop 1 is a Dell (not sure the model) when powered on shows message saying "no boot device". Laptop 2 is a gateway (again not sure the model) the gateway logo will come up and then the system restarts.

If in fact the HDDs are dead in both systems could it be possible that I could copy the recovery portion from one of the drives to a new HDD? Or if nothing else use the OS recovery from one of the laptops to install the windows OS into the new HDD?

I have an adapter that will allow me to connect a HDD to USB in case there is not a way i can connect a second HDD to one of the laptops.

Also could it be possible for me to remove the dvd drive, plug in a SATA cable from the HDD to where the DVD drive connects and the use the power source for the adapter to supply power to the HDD? This would only be considered an option if for some reason the adapter will not work through the USB port.

I am trying to find a fix for my friend who does not have the money for a windows OS disk, or the funds for one at the moment. Files are not important at this point only working.

The Dell sounds like a dead HDD. You can order the restore disks from them but they do charge you for it. Sometimes you can find them online but often also contain viruses added in.

The Gateway sounds like the drive might be fine. Disable the auto restart on error (press f8 right after the ok beep and select that option from the list) to get to the error message and then we can see whats going on with that.

Thank you for the information.

The reason I thought the gateway HDD was dead as well is because I have a dell desktop system that did the same thing. I couldn't even get the HDD to post as additional storage when connecting it to another system.

Back to these systems. I do know that Dell sells a copy of the OS that was installed onto the system when purchased. The problem is that at this moment in time there is no budget room at all for any thing that can't be ate.

thats why I mentioned the online option. You'll be able to burn ISO files to make installation DVD's but I would scan them with multiple anti-virus scanners before using them.
