I built a new computer last summer and it has been running fine ever since. I have installed and played numerous games and the hard drive began to get very full so tonight I decided I was going to reinstall Windows 7 and format the drive. Upon doing this, the installer gave me an error 0x8007017. I looked this up and was told my boot dvd could be bad so I re-downloaded a new dvd on a different computer. I rebooted my computer to make sure it still booted and everytime I tried booting (without the new dvd in) it would boot to a black screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS splash screen. I tried going in and resetting my BIOS settings but nothing has working. I tried putting the DVD in and booting from the dvd but after 30 seconds of the dvd drive spinning it just goes right back to the black screen with blinking cursor. Anyone have any ideas? I don't care about any of the data on the drive as I was trying to reset it in the first place.

Thanks!

Try this.make sure the hard drive did not die on you and is hanging the Sata bus. Unplug the data cable to the drive and see if the DVD boot.
If they do.you can try booting from a hirem boot cd run hdtune and vendor drive tools to see if the drive is bad. You can try on the hirem boot cd or Linux rescue boot cd tools to try fdisk and fdisk/mbr and a format to see if the drive will. If the drive looks fine but the DVD won't boot try making a bootable windows 7 USB stick using the microsoft USO to USB tools.
If your torrenting the windows 7 a lot of them are virus disks.
There is a leagal sight called digital river I think that has windows 7 iso images.

How long are you waiting at the "blinking cursor" screen? I had an installation that did that for almost 5 minutes, then went in to Windows as normal.

The fix was simply resetting the BIOS back to original. (CMOS battery removal & jumping the pins on the motherboard).

Thanks smorizio I will try that when i get home. I may just stop on the way home and buy a new hard drive actually so it shouldnt matter.

USAFRet, I waited for over an hour and it just kept blinking.
