I'm going to purchase a Dell XPS 8500 which has an Intel i7-3770 (not the K version, so no overclocking) and I need a cheap aftermarket cooler that I can use to replace the stock Intel cooler.

What I was wondering is which would be better for the 3770 right now, the 212 Evo or the 212+, and I'll get a pair of new fans for it later down the road.

You don't need one at all unless you are concerned about noise. If that's the reason, the stock fan on the Evo is very quiet with a reasonable fan profile and very cool.

Also, your case is only 7.3 inches wide outside diameter and the + or Evo is 6.34 inches tall, leaving just under an inch to fit the motherboard tray, socket, and interior panel width. Have you called Dell or talked to someone already running this configuration? Does Dell even have a hole in the tray for installing the backplate or are you going to pull the motherboard out to mount it?

+1 to jed ^^

To the OP the only real differences between the 212+ and 212 Evo is that the evo has minimized the gaps on the base where the coolers heat pipes meet the base of the cooler, and a slightly better fan. The are almost the same price and the evo cools 2-3c better.
