It's all in the title but I was just wondering if I could overclock a AM3 cpu on a AM3+ Motherboard. As I will be soon buying a AM3 CPU for a AM3+ Mobo.

Details:
CPU- AMD Phenom ii 3.4ghz 965 Black Edition.
MOBO - Do Not Know Need Assistance.

I also need assistance for buying a motherboard that will overclock the cpu and the same socket obviously.

Thanks!

I can only find some of these motherboards...

Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 990X Socket AM3+ 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 990FX Socket AM3+ 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Wonder if you know if these have OC features and how can you tell? Thanks

the dead giveaway is the power phase VRM of the motherboard.

generally speaking you need a 8+2 or power phase VRM for overclocking the FX series. you also need heatsinks on the mosfets.

the Gigabyte UD3/UD5/UD7 has long been a fav for overclockers of the new FX series. and has a 8+2 power phase VRM, and a very friendly bios for overclocking. Can't go wrong with the UD3, it's a great mb for the price.

the M5A99X is a solid overclocking mb... but it's only a 6+2 vrm which means it probably wouldn't be the best option for a 125W cpu... it should be fine for a 95w cpu like the 6300... overall if the price is the same i'd get the gigabyte. the UD3/UD5/UD7 series mbs are pretty much top of the heap for the 990fx chipset motherboards.
