Hello,

So the problem I'm having is when I go to safely remove a USB without actually there being a USB in there it shows as ... It used to be like when there was no device that needed to be safely removed, that icon would never show. I only just reformatted my computer last Christmas. I know its not hurting anything being there but it's been bugging me ever since. If you know of a solution of how to fix it or even hide the icon I would love to hear.

Here are some pictures:

Thanks for the quick reply,

I'm not sure what the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Software is so i'm wary on uninstalling it, or even how to. If you could please explain that would be lovely, not sure if this extra information will help but I have an Samsung 840 SSD which the operating system was installed onto.

If my understanding is correct, the Rapid Storage software is needed only if you have two or more hard drives operating in a RAID array. To uninstall on Win7 go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Software, find it in the list and click uninstall. I don't know about uninstalling things from Windows 8. I've only used Win7.

My computer recognizes a USB that's not the problem, what i'm asking is how do I make it so it does not display the [ ...] or hide the icon when I don't have a USB in my computer.

On my computer, if I have Rapid Storage installed the icon for "Safely Remove" is always displayed even when there is nothing plugged into USB. When I uninstall the Rapid Storage software... the icon for "Safely Remove" goes away and only will show up when a device is plugged into the USB. Maybe I'm still misunderstanding the problem.

Hey silverbrit,

I had the same problem after reinstalling Windows 8, and for me, the solution was to uninstall Daemon Tools and reinstall it. I don't exactly know why it caused this malfunction (ie. showing an empty .... under the safely remove hardware icon) but uninstalling and re-installing Daemon Tools did the trick and everything is fine know (I used the latest version of DT the second time instead of the older one I already had on my drive, maybe that was the problem in the first place). I can imagine this sort of malfunction with other virtual device applications, so maybe it's something worth looking into. Let us know if it worked for you.

All the best!

Does your pc have any card readers? integrated into the monitors perhaps? Microsoft in their infinite wisdom has made their OS unable to distinguish between that which is removeable and that which is permanent. If it uses a universal serial bus - your screwged.

I have the same problem and its due to my monitors card readers which show up as a usb mass storage device. Removing the device will remove the icon but only until restart. If you disable it in device manager - it will be gone for good. Unfortunately this isn't really much of a solution.

Until I find something better - its all I got. Infiniately better than the people who suggest you "ignore" it or "hide" It as if you want a gaudy arrow down there any more than a icon lol.

To point you in the right direction otherwise - I "believe" individual devices can be altered via the registry to stop them from tripping the icon. Ive personally found the device ID/Devices in the registry, as well as the parameter which does so.. but the value is where im currently stuck.

I'll post back if I find anything else.
