I have a netgear DGN2200 router/modem. I had no problem w/setup. However, the last time my router was kicked out, I reboot it and then it worked fine, but it upgraded the firmware. After that I got a d-link router in my wireless status, I cannot get rid of it. I tried to get into the routers setup online, but nothing seems to stand out, thought maybe its a multicast thing, but have no idea. It comes and goes on my wireless connection. Its not secure, I have my netgear setup, but my laptop will not see it as netgear, instead its putting it as microsoft and listing it as a gateway router. I cannot get my netgear modem/router to be recognized. It did before, I had the netgear logo. I got online the router.logon page, and still after reboot I am still getting this gateway router and not my netgear, but still I have a connection. I do not know what to do and need help. I need to know if this is a hacker someone getting into my system. My Macaffee total security saying Im ok, but what is wrong? Can anyone help me? (I guess what I am saying is why do I have the d-link, when I didnt set it up and why is it unsecured, when my netgear is secured by wpa2 psk? thanks for any help)

What do you mean by your router being "kicked out"? Do you mean the last time your pc lost connection with your router?
Routers don't usually upgrade their firmware automatically, although I could always be wrong. Maybe yours is different.

After that I got a d-link router in my wireless status, I cannot get rid of it.

What you probably mean is that you see another network named "D-link (something)" in your available wireless signals list. Obviously, since it's not your network it might not be safe to connect to it.

When you configure your router, are you connecting to it via a cable? Try connecting to it with a network cable and configure the router that way. Check the router's wireless visibility settings to see if it's set to Invisible instead of Visible. Having it set to Invisible would explain why you can't see your router/network on your wireless list.

ok, when i say kicked out, I mean my providor Verizon, dosent like the fact I am using my own router/modem. Ihad to config. it online the netgear.logon site, when I did this, I got my provider log on put on the site so it will be recongized by verizon and netgear.logon site. Well, when I i did get all of this config. I noticed an upgrade, so I thought it couldnt hurt, so I hit it, and it upgraded it, from the netgear log on site. Anyways, I am connected thru telephone and still use wired and wireless set ups. As for the d-link, its listed on my status page, and yes its unsecured, however, its mine!!! the problem I am having is why is it off and on all the time and my isp tool noticed it, and I cannot get rid of it. The fact I get a gateway microsoft logo and name for my router/modem setup, is not what I did,and not sure how it got this way. Netgear is no longer being seen as my router/modem in my network setup. I have to manually get to the netgear.logon site, and put in my password, etc... and still after resetting it, its not being recongized by the laptop. I hit the network tab, (win7) and it comes up with the gateway device by microsoft, then it has as the location as the netgear router in the network infrastructure. I had the netgear logo and its properties that led me to thier logon page with password. I not longer have that option. How in the blazes did this gateway device w/microsoft come up? As for the d-link, its put an icon on my desktop and I have tried to delete it. so it has to be my router putting out the d-link, so how is this possible while I have the netgear also being online, but that one is secured. I just want it back to the way it use to be. No problems. I had none for a year, til VErizon didnt like my and or reconized it wasnt their modem/router, have no clue now as to what to do. I can still get online, but really cannot find any thing to see if this is a bug, virus, worm, hacked???? I did a virus scan, nothing, did a spybot thing, and it took away all the search bars I didnt need, etc.... and other things. Still I see this d-link, how in blazes can I get rid of it, and or somehow disable it, since its a logo on my desktop, and well its been deleted and out of the recycle bin, so this d-link must be mine, and its there on status and then its gone. I cannot make heads or tales of this...

I want to start off by clarifying that the "netgear log on site" is not an actual internet website! It is the router's configuration web page. I'll repeat it: You are NOT connecting to an Internet website, you are connecting directly to your router's webpage to configure it. That could also explain the "update" button you saw.

Normally, ISPs provide their own modems. Often times these modems also double up as a router/wireless router. It is normally mandatory that you use the ISP's device to access the internet, for reasons I won't get into now. This is relevant because the netgear DGN2200 you have is itself an ADSL modem which apparently also works as a router. There could be some conflict going on but I think that most likely you're doing something wrong with the config settings. I did a bit of research on that model and it would appear that you can also use it as just a router.

Things should be connected in a fashion similar to this:

PC ----> (lan port) Netgear router/modem (Wan port) ---> (Lan port) Verizon modem/router (Wan port) ----> Internet

In your case, however, it could be easier to configure the 2 devices 1 by 1 FIRST before connecting everything in the manner mentioned above. Try first connecting your PC to your Verizon modem/router with a cable and see if you can access the internet.
