Hi,

I'm building a mini-itx gaming pc. I haven't done this for a while and could really use some help regarding the GPU.

since i only can have 1 gpu in my build i want the gpu to hold for atleast 1-2 years. I will be playing games like crysis, bf3, wot and bioshock. I think i'll go with a ASUS VG278HE screen (1980*1080 @ 144hz).

my question is if the gtx 680 will be good enough to play the games in 2d at a 120-144 fps (with light boost) all maxed out, or should i go for a titan (the prise doesnt matter).

specs:
mobo: asus p8z77-i deluxe
cpu: 3770k
ram: 2 x 8GB corsair dominator platinum 1866mhz
psu: corsair ax760i platinum
case: bitfenix prodigy
ssd: samsung 256gb 840pro
screen: ASUS VG278HE

Solution
There is no possible way to max out all games at 120-144 FPS. It is impossible to play all games at their lowest settings and get 120-144 FPS. Some games have CPU bottlenecks which will not allow you to maintain 120+ FPS. Crysis 3 is one of them, so is BF3 at some times in multiplayer.

That said, a 690 would get you there in most games it is possible.

Why the Titan? The 690 is priced the same and is better for gaming.

If the purpose of this build is strictly for gaming, the Titan shouldn't even be on your list.

But I guess you should be fine in most games with the 680.

1 all games will not be playable at 120-144 fps maxed out on a 680 or a titan. You'll need a multi card set up for that. 2 titans would be ideal given that price doesn't matter.

Hello, I do have a Gigabyte 680gtx with a 1138MHz OC GPU, i7 and 8 GB DDR3, you know the normal hi end gaming pc... and I play bf3, crysis 3 and Starcraft 2. The GPU is not enough to hold 120 hz on ultra settings.... I have an Asus VG278H, the 3D one; I will post my FPS for each game, so you can get an idea...

Battlefield 3 - Vsync on - ultra settings : 2D= 75 FPS, big maps 55 FPs +-... 3D = 30 FPS +-

Crysis 3 . Vsync on - ultra settings: 2D= 25 -30 FPS .... 3D = 20-25 FPS .... (not recommendable in ultra settings)

Starcraft 2 "Extreme", Vsync on: 2D= 99 FPS approx .... 3D= 40 FPS ( I do not recommend play it on 3D but watch replays instead because there are too many bugs for the 3D settings... )

Crysis 2 ultra, vsync etc... I was getting like 50 FPs approx.

If you want to play them at ultra and super smooth, you either need a SLI ... but you should go deeper on the titan specs cause I heard that 2 GTX680 cards which are the same money give you 130% more performance than the titan... but... your call =)

Since he wants only one card, wouldn't he be better with the 690? It's only one card (although dual-gpus-on-one) and based on recent Tom's Hardware articles it performs better than the Titan at gaming and is priced the same.

I thought that the Titan was more aimed at people doing OpenCL/GL, CUDA, Catia, Solidworks, etc... and who also want to game on the same machine.

thanks NyxSlayer for the fps list.

i only have one pci slot on the mobo, so im not able go go for 2 x 680.

and the reason i didnt mentioned the 690 is that i heard some "scary" stories about driver issues / micro stuttering. does anyone know if thats true? if not the 690 looks like the best bet here, i think.

and does anyone know if the 690 runs as cool/quiet as the titan?

Nah titan is like the Nvidia crap shoot, pardon my language. It doesn't do computing very well. If you want an all around system I'm still going to have to recommend the 7970 because of how powerful it is in opencl applications. In terms of CUDA the titan usually loses out to the 680 or ties it, because of how locked the titan is so people don't buy it over the actual tesla in bulk. In terms of gaming performance single card it's the best, but 20% better than a 680/7970 ghz does not warrant the price. So in non-price related systems of course you'd get it. However it's like having the option to buy a 780 while the 680 is still around. You know what I'm trying to say? Like it's the closest singular card that can give the performance the OP wants.

Hmm. Are your drivers up to date?

I have a Gigabyte GTX670 OC and i5-3570K and 8GB 1600MHz RAM all at stock settings.

I play Crysis 3 MP Adap-Vsync Ultra 1920x1080 and get 40-50FPS. I just turn down shading and leave all else on max and get >60FPS always. Considering GTX680 is 9% faster than 670, you should get a bit better than this.
And BF3 gets >60FPS with all maxed and Anti-Aliasing.

Well for crysis 3 I mean the campaign, for multiplayer I'm getting a lot of FPS, not sure how many tho.

for bf3 well I got all maxed out and V-sync on, but it depends on the maps, most of them I'm getting >60.

The bad thing is that I can't OC my card cause there are compatibility issues with Starcraft 2 =( My life sux.
