help! popped off a heat sink. dont know what it is.

Quick question. I'm transferring my PC internals into a new case. It was an HP pavilion 6510f. It has an aloe motherboard. As I was removing the power cable of the exhaust fan i seemed to have debonded the nearby heatsink. Its the one between the CPU and the io ports. Is this something I should fix before I try to turn the PC on? I would upload a pic, but I'm having difficulties with that as well.

We will be able to help you better if you provide a pic of the heatsink. But after seeing the specs the most probable answer here is the heatsink on the gpu has popped. The heatsink is about 2.5x2.5x3cm in size.

So its probably the integrated graphics chip heatsink? If I upgraded to an actual video card....is that heat sink even relevant anymore?

Yeah, probably. It was there for a reason.

It is not much important but put th heatsink back anyway, because after any bios reset the initial display device will be the integrated gpu, so it is kinda of a precaution.

I mean...the heatsink is "back"...but do you guys mean...clean out the too, reapply and reinstall?

What do you mean by heatsink is back? Anyway clean previous thermal paste apply new thermal paste and put the heatsink where it was. If the heatsink uses thermal tape then remove the old thermal tape and use new tape to put it back in place.

Ah...sorry. I meant I put the heatsink back with the old paste still on it. Darn. Gotta wait until tomorrow to turn this thing on.

Yes you should fix this before turning on your PC, especially when you do not have a graphics card.

In that picture...it is the heat sink located just above the PCIe slot...between the CPU and the io ports. It says online that this could be the north bridge? Which I guess nowadays...the onboard graphics chip? Either way I'll get some grease.

it's the tall heatsink. Any thermal paste will do? Just make a dab WAY smaller than what would be used on a CPU? (This would be my first time with thermal pastes). Thanks again for all your help.

Yes any heat sink paste will do as you are not using the discrete gpu anyway.
