I'm looking into overclocking my i5-3570k so i downloaded some programs to monitor my CPU. I open cpu-z and i read my core speed, 4223.XX MHz. This is only an i5, I haven't changed any setting in the Bios or in my cpu. My bios says im running around 3.5 GHz so im really not sure whats going on here. Does anyone know how to fix this? I would be very surprised if this is actually running at 4.2 GHz

STD clock is 3.4GHz with 3.8GHz turbo boost so I would say CPU-Z is wrong, try reinstalling it.

Do you have the latest version?
Mine is v1.64 x64.

Does it display your exact CPU name?

Is the frequency changing?
(under "CPU->clocks (core#0)-> core speed")
If you have power management and the default settings it should be toggling between about 1600MHz and 3500MHz roughly.

My i7-3770K settings are showing up properly.
