Anyone give me an idea how powerful 2 7850's would be in crossfire? I have one and buying another one. No dual monitors just want the extra power and fps. What would I compare it to?

You would have comparable performance to roughly a 7970ghz edition or gtx 680. However I will be the first to recommend you try stick with a single card configuration because they are so much easier to deal with but if you are set on getting another 7850 then that's your choice entirely

Haha ok, just make sure your PSU etc are all up to scratch for a dual card setup, wouldn't want you to ruin something from the PSU suddenly shutting off

yup 800w rosewill lightning gold certified

She's my first build, everythings gone good, just haven't read into to much for crossfire setup, I was going to get a 690 down the road, but figured I'd try crossfire out.

That looks like a lot of high end parts for a mid range GPU.

Ah good ol black friday. I always end up with stuff I don't need. My HTPC currently has a 3770K in it with a HD 7850. I am sure it will get upgraded this black friday :)

I wouldn't recommend it. I've had a 7850 CF and it was a pain in the buttocks. CFX for low end cards isn't worth it because you can buy a single card with the same performance and no issues for basically the same price. there is no real sense to go for a 7850 crossfire, unless you aren't willing to sell your first card.

Can you explain how your experience was so bad? and I currently have a hd7850 and only other option was to crossifre it and wait till I get a 690 down the road and put the dual 7850 in another system when i plan to upgrade

It was hot, loud, quite power consuming, there wasn't any microstuttering though. The computer would crash whenever WMP was opened due to not clocking up, and then I also had clocking up issues in games. I spent around 10X more time configuring my setup then I was actually playing games.

With CFX, scaling isn't definite, and you'll go weeks without CFX drivers for new games sometimes. Look, trust me when I say, you would rather a nice overclocking 7970 than two 7850's, as you get none of those issues (Except power consumption is maybe the same), so no microstuttering or waiting weeks for Crossfire profiles, or scaling issues.

Well I'll let you know how it goes cause I already paid for it..... before I posted SO that being said, I hope that my experience isn't as bad as you say yours was. I've read through the forms and it seems people have mixed opinions and experiences.

Either way I'll learn from it.

and after reading slomo4sho link it sounds kinda worth it since I'm getting the second 7850 for 200 bucks including shipping

and I paid less for the one I have now, which is much cheaper then the 7970 in the long run.

You can get a 7970 for around $350 if you know where to look. At 100% scaling you'll get a tad bit more performance than a 7970, but considering most of the time you'll get around 80%, you're losing both in price and performance. The performance is great if you can get it working perfectly, but tbh, when there is a card which is just better overall its hard to see why you would want to get two 7850's.

I already have one 7850, I don't see who I would sell it to in my small town. and 350 wasn't what my girlfriend and I agreed upon, I have a 200 dollar budget for a new computer component, I chose to try out crossfire.

I would agree with you if I had a bigger budget after doing some more research.

After a quick search on pc parts picker Canada I can't find a 7970 for $350, the cheapest is $409 + shipping

I appreciate your input though and sharing your advice.

Thank you JJ1217.

First day with the crossfire setup and now see why you said its a headache. Witcher 2 crashes after testing it all day in 3dmark, I've underclocked it and still crashing in witcher 2 locks my computer up and I have to reset. Anyone have any advice other then saying get a single gpu set up

Don't underclock them, if you have to underclock them then it's not working as it should so just complain and get a full refund on the card(s) if you want, just an option

I meant I went back to stock clock speeds which is gigabytes oc I've tested the new card and it works fine, I've ran 3d tests on the crossfire all damn day and each card individualy and everything was fine until the witcher 2's hard crash.

I agree. Try other games. Witcher 2 is a fail for me, I have it and I can't even get to the menu because it crashes (Seems to be a resolution based issue, not GPU, but still issues regardless).

Try Valley, Heaven and other things. Honestly if 3DMark works fine (And provided you are hitting 100% load with the GPU), it just looks to be the game to me. Remember not all games are multi-GPU configured. Try disabling crossfire and playing.
