Hey guys,

This is my system:
- HAF X
- i5 2500k
- Sea Sonic X-760
- HD6950 dirt 3 edition
- Asrock Z68 extreme 4 gen 3
...

I used to startup my computer with 4 front panel usb slots filled with (2x WD elements 1,5 TB powered ext HDD and 2x Western Digital My Book Essential (3 TB))

My Headphones, microphone and mouse (Sennheiser HD598, Logitech MX518 and 5$ microphone) are inserted into my Logitech G110 keyboard, which is inserted into a motherboard USB2 slot in the back.

Whenever I startup my computer with these 4 harddrives (each with their own power adapter) I get a popping electric sound in my headphones, and sometimes the keyboard and mouse stop working on the login screen and I have to wait a few seconds before I can type in my password.

My first thought was a power shortage. But how can those 4 external drives cause a power shortage when they each have their own power adapter?

Another thing that happened quite frequently was while I was watching videos/gaming. The sound would hang for 0,5 seconds and it would give like a electric sound (pretty irritating for the ears) before returning to normal.
This has not happened since I stopped working with the external drives plugged in.

I'm not entirely sure this last problem is caused by the hard drives also, but the first one (startup) certainly is.

I hope someone could give me a hand here.

Thanks!

I can now describe the problem a bit more clear:

So whenever I boot up my system, during windows startup (the logo) the following happens simultaniously:
- the backlight of my keyboard stops working
- my headphones pop with an electric popping sound
- the fans of the system (which you can hear only during bootup), stop making noise.

This is for a brief second but can happen multiple times during the boot process. Sometimes my keyboard and mouse dont work when trying to log in to windows (after 2 seconds of waiting they do work again).

This only happens when booting, when working intensively on my computer, I never notice anything alike.

The only thing that also happen(s)(ed) and is similar is that my sound would hang during video playback/games/youtube, when 4 external harddrives are connected via usb at thesame time.
I had no external harddrive plugged in at the moment of the problem.

My setup: Keyboard plugged into the back of my system into the motherboard. Mouse, heaphone and microphone plugged into my keyboard. (Logitech G110, Logitech MX518, Sennheiser HD598)

Have you tried plugging your headphones into another source to see if they're the problem? You could try something like an iPad, iPod, MP3 player, CD player, DVD player, and so on and so forth. Try that first - chances are good that there's an audio driver conflict somewhere - whether it's in Windows, or the drivers themselves.

Yes, I've tried them in my laptop for an extended period of time, no problems there.

What worries me is the fact that my keyboard, mouse, headphones AND fans of my computer seem to shut down at boot for some reason.
I think it has to do with the amount of power avaible, but I don't see how. I have a 760Watt PSU and shouldnt a usb slot be able to handle all this?

That is odd. Unfortunately since your computer isn't in front of me it would be way more difficult to diagnose the problem. But if I had to guess as to what the problem is, it could be a number of things. Have you checked all connections going to your motherboard? Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers? Have you completely reformatted your machine and reinstalled Windows?

This problem still persisted after completely reinstalling, partially disassembling and dusting off the computer. (+ clean windows installation)

Is it normal that your headphones, when plugged into the headphone jack in front/back/keyboard, make a popping sound when your system is booting?

Thanks
