Hi, I am putting together my first computer build and want to use a psu that I already had, a raidmax 530, but it had only a 4pin for the cpu which is a fx-6100, the motherboard, an msi http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... has a 8pin connecter, can I use the 4pin anyway? And if so, does it matter which slots I put it in?

More about : pin

Please be careful to not double post the same question.

Yes, you can do as you are asking. If you look at the connector and the socket, you'll see that the connector is keyed to fit in a certain way. It will fit properly into one end of the 8-pin socket. Don't try to force into the other end.

Pretty easy. Good luck!

You should be okay there, but I don't recommend it because you get better power spread across 8 pins than 4 pins. But with your CPU, I think it's fine. As far as I'm aware, you need 8 pins for 125W or more. Oh and BTW, that PSU is crap.

Will there be any issues with turboing? What would happen if the power spread is not good?
I'll likely upgrade in a month to a psu with an 8pin.

As the other guys have said it should work but you may want to upgrade to a corsair, xfxpro,or seasonic powersupply.

1. If you're overclocking, I would not recommend that you use 4-pin. You will be fine without it and then upgrade the PSU later and then get the 8-pin hook. There is a 4-pin to 8-pin power cable converter though. You can find it on Amazon or Newegg. Though, I highly suggest you upgrade your PSU anyway. Raidmax is just crap. Stick with Antec, Corsair, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, and XFX.

2. Nothing will happen if you don't OC. You CPU has a TDP of 95W so it should be fine as is. Just that power from the PSU must power your CPU with 4 pins instead of 8 pins. So each pin gets higher current. Again, don't push it by OC now. You can try the 4-pin to 8-pin converter, but I wouldn't trust your PSU well with OC. haha

I understand what you're saying and thank you very much for your help. However, are yo8u suggesting I should turn of turbo when you say Oc or actual manual oc?

I went ahead and put it together and it worked!
I do have one more question, I used a motherboard that requires 6 screws but the upper right one would only screw half way so I took it out, is this going to be ok down the road?

As long as the others are secure, you should be fine. No worries.

BTW, enabling "turbo" is not the same as overclocking. You should be able to enable with no issues.

Good luck!
