I'm going to have to open my Fractal Design Arc Midi case to replace a defective fastener for the front dust filter (kudos to Fractal for replacing the part quickly). When I did the initial build I hooked up the three case fans to the top panel controller that comes with the case (settings are 5, 7 and 12 volts) and I've been running the system at the medium setting. My ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard has three connections for case fans so that the motherboard can control the speed of the case fans. Do I gain anything in terms of changing the hook up to the MoBo? I'm primarily interested in energy savings (maybe not significant) and quiet. I primarily use the computer for photo processing and general work. I'm not a gamer and don't overclock.

using the tuning software that came with the mobo, you could adjust the fan speed which would cut down on noise (may increase heat) but the energy savings would be so small you would never notice
