Connecting two monitors

Hi folks,

My first post...

I have been looking at running two monitors off my PC for sometime and I have finally found a matching monitor to go with my current one (Advent P22WH).

My graphics card (Intel(R) HD Family) has a VGA port and a DVI port. Currently, I use the VGA port for my single screen. Can I now use the DVI port to run my second monitor? If so, can you offer any (simple) guidance on how to go about this please and any cables/etc that I may need?

The monitors that I have only have VGA inputs.

Thanks in anticipation.

You indirectly answered your own question in the OP -- If you are using the VGA port for your main monitor and have a DVI remaining, then you clearly need a DVI cable to connect the second monitor.

Side note, you said, "I finally found a matching monitor" which implies that you NEED a matching monitor to run dual monitor -- you dont.

Thanks - so presumably if I use a DVI cable and add a convertor to the end to go from DVI to VGA so it fits into my monitor, this should do the job?

I understand that I don't need the same monitor exactly to run dual - that was purely as I didn't want to use two different ones. It just looks better IMO!

Sorry pal, no idea what this means. I have never used the DVI port before. Always stuck with VGA.

I'm not technical which I why I have come to this forum. I thought I might get some helpful/friendly advice.

Your attitude, as a moderator, isn't helpful.

Thanks to those of you who have offered some help. Take a leaf out of their book.

Can't give advice until I know what you have.

Odds are you can use a DVI to VGA adapter. Assuming your Intel IGP can run two monitors at once you simply run the adapter and another VGA cord to your second monitor and you are golden. I would have thought you would have figure this out BEFORE buying the second monitor. You can use a program called CPUz to figure out what CPU and motherboard you have.

Helpful enough?

He said Intel so I know he's using an IGP. But we don't know which one. (could be from the P4 days...) I'm guessing older as most new ones have HDMI. I don't pay any attention to IGPs. does anyone know if any of Intel's IGPs support two analog outputs?

Andy, as always I mean no disrespect. You said you're not a techie so you can always ask how to do something. (find motherboard model number, etc) I always aim to give the best advice. Which is very hard to do if I don't have any of the info.

Is it possible to buy a cheap card? You should be able to easily do what you want with a card from AMD or Nvidia. If you don't do any gaming any of the current cheap (<50£) cards should work just fine.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - very much appreciated.

In response to the last post - I have no HDMI port on the back of my machine if that makes any difference? I think the machine is around two years old (from new).

Right now, I am using one screen hooked up by VGA. I hope that I will be able to attached the second screen using DVI (with VGA adaptor to plug into my screen). I'll do some research to see what motherboard / graphics card I am using if this is likely to be beneficial.

Cheers!
