GPU over heats

When im playing my games on my pc after about 20-30 mins my computer blacks out for a few seconds and sometimes the game crashes saying my GPU has stopped working, now reading online i figured this meant my GPU was overheating so i downloaded GPU-Z to monitor my temperature and while playing its reaching the high 80's when not to long ago it would only reach maybe max high 50's. iI do not know where this is coming from because i regularly clean my PC for dust and such. I have a GeForce GTX 550 Ti with a 700W PSU. I've had all this for about two years now and i do not overclock at all. Could my GPU simply be dying?

This may sound stupid... but where do you live? I mean... summer's rolling along and we're having a major heat wave where I live right now. It's probably not that, but you never know?

If not, did you notice if you GPU/computer makes less noise than usually? Maybe the fan on your GPU is indeed dying... try running your comp open (careful not to shock/burn yourself) and see if you can either visualize or at least hear your GPU fan.

I live in new york and its in the 60's right now so i doubt that's it, but i did have that problem years ago. My fan is not making any noise which is usual for it and it still runs nicely. And i'll try with the vent open to see if that helps. still, it's rather usual for it to be hitting such high levels.

What did you do to fix that problem when you had it? I'm kind of wondering because right now it's freaking me out a little, lol...

But as for your current problem, it got me stumped! Does it do it on a particular game, or anything in general? I remember reading that alot of GeForce users had problems with Mass Effect 1 and 2 back in the day...

try installing the latest driver, I used to have the same issue while playing Starcraft 2, (even tho it was known that SC2 blew up your GPU) but I reinstalled the driver and it gave me more FPS and the GPU was not overheating at all.

BTW what games do you play?...

Hey yea i have them all updated and it's still doing it which is why i'm afraid it's just simply dying. I play Star Wars The Old Republic, Civilization 5 mostly, i do play various others and over them after awhile crash and overheats, Solo play and mutiplayer

hmm, thats wierd, Are you sure the fan is spinning? do you have a software to monitor the Fan's RPM?

Telling you cuz 2 years ago my GPU's fan got stucked and broke, so I had to improvise so I "added" a CPU's fan and disipator to the GPU and it has worked since then.... I know it sounds dangerous but open the case, run the game and reaching the 75°, touch the disipator and check the fan.... if that still working.... well try a brainstorm.... disssamble the video card, put it back again.... if that doesn't work.... Houston(wallet) we have a problem...

my fans RPM 1770 RPM, that what GPU-z is telling me and i just tried playing star wars again and it was reaching 82c .As i was trying it out i touched the fan while the readings were giving me the 82c and its cool air coming out of it. lmao pretty funny, so what do you guys think? is the GPU shot? i was thinking of getting the GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB as a replacement just in case. Do you think my 700w PSU is enough for that or should i upgrade that too?

mmm unless there's an expert on this stuff here....

the best case scenario is try the GPU in another PC... check if it works properly ... .... if not then yup buy a new one....
OOOOR... you can format your pc.... doubt you would do that......

Sorry my brain can't go further xD Good luck man.

-If the life of the capacitor is still good the PSU is enough.... if not you will have malfunctions.

Install GPUz and Furmark. Now, run Furmark for 15 minutes while having GPUz open. Furmark should tell you how active your fans are. If they aren't very active at about 80c+, you have a major issue and need a new graphics card.
