I just built my computer a few days ago and it was going well for the first few days then the video card got coil whine. So i returned it today and got a new 7870xt but as soon as i started using it, coil whine. Is their something wrong with my build or are the sapphire 7870xt's just poorly made? My brother has an asus 7870 (awesome cooler on it, it's quieter than his case fans when under load) and i tried it in my computer and no whine, i tried both 7870xt in his computer and they each whined. It only whines when its being used, no matter the frame rate or if v-sync is on or off. I've tried over/under clocking the card but that doesn't help. This is my computer
intel i5-3570k
gigabyte ga z77x-d3h
corsair vengeance 2x4gb low profile
sapphire 7870xt
antec hcg 620m
1tb seagate barracuda

My brother has
intel core2duo quadcore
asus p5nd
not sure about the rest

I got the card on sale for $220 and the only comparable card would be a 660ti which is about 50$ more. I have to buy the card from Canadacomputers since they only give store credit for defects. Am i being too picky? The coil whine is louder than the fans at 55% and the same as them at 55%. The fans on the card rarely go past 50% unless i'm stress testing the gpu. I've heard that it can be certain computer parts in combination can cause it. Is this one of those cases or just a bad batch of cards? I don't like using headphones and i can't have the volume to loud since i work in the afternoon and get home at night and that's when i play. What's the best thing to do?
Option 1: Exchange it for a new one and hope for the best?
Option 2: Get an asus 7870 since its $250
option 3: cough up $80 and get a 660ti

Coil whine is a known problem with tahiti core gpus. with some its worse then others. Generally speaking the gpu coolers are usually too loud on those things to hear it so it's not a "common" problem per say.

Coil whine is caused by the type of mix of the ceramics, the mix of the board materials and the frequency of the electricity running through the whole thing, causing the ceramics to vibrate against the board.

its an inconsistent enough problem that manufacturers can't really plan for it, or design it out. And it effects both nvidia and amd/ati gpus. The thing is, it REALLY is effecting the Tahiti core Radeons this time around.

I'd try another return. it's an inconsistent and random enough problem that you just need to find a card from a different batch of parts, and the problem probably will go away (or atleast be less audible).

The first one got worse, i left it on furmark for about 10 hours and it was got louder than it was before. But i have another 15 days so i'll try again. I also read on the forums that the drivers were causing issues to one person, but that was about a month ago and i'm running the latest non-beta drivers. No harm in trying them i suppose.

Really? I read on the forums that it can help with coil whine. What about unigene?
