I bought a new Onkyo receiver (TX-SR313) and have a simple setup hooking my HDTV and two Bose speakers to it. My problem is, when watching a DVD the sound comes from the Bose speakers but when I switch to TV and try to watch cable, I only get sound from the tv speakers. I have the receiver connected to the tv with HDMI cable and RCA cable (read and white plugs). I don't think my Toshiba tv is ARC capable. Can anyone help me get sound output to my receiver speakers while watching cable?

One more thing: what sort of cable plugs into the "digital audio out" connection on the back of the tv? The connector slot is round and orange.

Thank for the response. Yes, I've downloaded the .pdf manual and read through it. I've gone through all the settings and tried almost every combination of settings on the receiver AND the audio setup on the tv itself. I just can't get sound to output to receiver speakers when watching cable. I guess I'll go the electronics store and buy a digital coax cable and see if that is the issue.

Solved!! Went to the Shack and bought a digital audio coax (the "orange") and it worked right away. I guess the receiver couldn't decode the analog signal from the red and white RCA cables? Either way the digital coax gives better sound quality anyway. Too bad this Toshiba doesn't have that HDMI-ARC connection. I had assumed it did at first and that cost me a few hours of frustration.
