If I have 3 computers receiving connectivity via an ethernet switch, can I access an external hard drive connected to one of them with files-sharing? There are other computers connected to the router that feeds the switch that I DON'T want to give access to, just the ones on the switch.

Hmm, the computer with the (multiple) drives is XP professional and too old to upgrade. I'm using it as a music/ video player. Only my main computer that I want to access files from is Win 7 pro.

The XP PC is not set up as a server but as a regular computer with external hard drives plugged into it. Unless by server you mean it's the computer that has direct access to the files? I'm not sure how to set or revoke access, or what the username/password are that you're referring to. Sorry, I have zero networking experience... does my setup even qualify as a network since it's two computers connected to an ethernet switch?

By "server" I am referring to the PC which will serve the files over the network. Yes, your two-computers setup does qualify for a network.

As for users and rights - check "Users and passwords" item in Control Panel. You might have to define new users, with same names / passwords, and give them both Administrative rights. Then, connect your external hard drive, and share its root directory, then give that newly created user all access rights.
