The i5-3570 is better for gaming. However, the i7 has it's merits in rendering or application that heavily use both FPU and ALU instructions heavily, where HyperThreading can be utilized well. However, gaming does not do that, so the i5 is better in this case, espiecally the more efficient Ivy Bridge architecture.

It seems that cause of i7 920's low frequency (2,66Ghz) it cannot keep up with i5 3570 (3,4Ghz) even on multi threaded programs. Hyperthreading cannot beat higher hz and better architecture together. Source: Anandtech
So i5 3570 is not only faster in games but its generally faster in everything apart from 1-2 programmes.
