Can I do this?

Absolutely. PCI-E is backwards compatible, so a PCI-E 2.0 card will work in a PCI-E 3.0 slot, and vice versa.

the pci-e version number only sets the max limit on amount of data that can be streamed through the expansion slot. Think of it similar to plugging a USB 2.0 drive into a USB 3.0 slot and vice versa

No issue and it will run full 2.0 bandwidth too.
